Day 54: Sidelined

May 8, 2020

Karma? Maybe.

I injured my shoulder. Day #4 of 80 Day Obsession was manageable, and I honestly I was pleased with the level of fitness/strength I thought I had when I began the new series.

BUT if I could turn back the clock ~20 hours and NOT do the workout when I felt a questionable twinge in my shoulder . . . I would do so. Because now the twinge is an injury. Probably some kind of rotator cuff tendinitis (based on internet research and the not-so-expert opinion of a conveniently located vascular surgeon).

ANYWAY. I obviously pouted about it, but I recognize there are many MANY worse things. I will however be putting a pause on my 80 Day Obsession which pains me but . . . is clearly necessary. I can still walk and presumably run without pain and do lower body work, so maybe I will try out some barre workouts / squats / lunges. But no pushups or ‘full body’ types of moves.

NOTE: It is absolutely not the first time I have made the mistake of pushing past a ‘maybe injury’ and one would think I would learn my lesson. This is one of the dark sides of being an Upholder I think; the strong desire to stick with “THE PLAN” sometimes supersedes logic and common sense. And then you end up injured AND feeling sheepish about it. (Although reading this post from 2007, I do feel as if I have made some progress. SPOILER ALERT: Even as a spry 26 year old, it took me weeks to recover and I never did make it to the start of that 2007 marathon! Also, at least I’ve learned to capitalize letters now!)

So! I think that’s enough for the day.

Pic o’ the day

This lasted for a solid 60 minutes while I sulked rested on the couch. And then we watched most of Brave (well, the kids & Josh watched it and I sat with them and read more of Next Year In Havana which is a nice distraction so far).

Injuries are the worst, I hope you feel better soon! If it makes you feel any better, I actually ruptured my good Achilles tendon a few weeks ago doing a leap challenge (despite warming up well and making sure the side with tendinitis didn’t hurt) and so had to have surgery in the middle of all of this. Despite the craziness of chasing my kids on crutches while working with no childcare, we’re somehow still managing though. For my tendonitis what helped me most was ice dipping where I dipped my foot in and out of a bucket filled with water and frozen water bottles. I’m not a medical professional and I don’t know how you would do this with your shoulder, but for me it was more effective than regular ice packs. Best wishes for a fast recovery!

Hi! Ice massage along your shoulder with an ice cup (https://youtu.be/bF5DYxmTi5Y) will really help. I’d run it along the anterior joint capsule-it doesn’t take very long (2 min) & you can repeat it several times a day. Be gentle picking up your youngest.

Just finished Next Year in Havana! I think the historical piece of it was more interesting than the love stories, but overall still a good read. I will probably read When We Left Cuba at some point.
