Weekend

Saturday Mornings

September 18, 2021

The kids will probably be up any second. I would love an additional 30-40 minutes to myself — or while we are dreaming, how about 2 hours?

I would:

Do a leisurely version of my weekday morning routine

Work out (bodyweight strength today)

I imagine that there might someday be a time in my life when this could realistically happen. As a child, I used to sleep in until 10-11 regularly on weekends. And I didn’t necessarily stay up very late the night before (let’s just say I wasn’t always able to stay awake through the last half hour of TGIF — it all went downhill after Step by Step). Sometimes I woke up at that leisurely hour to smell of French toast or pancakes (thanks, mom).

Something tells me this show probably didn’t age well. I identified strongly with the overly uptight character on the left.

Until then I will brace myself for the pitter patter of little feet down the stairs around 7, and remain grateful that it’s not 5 or 6!

TODAY:

Hopefully trade off workout time with Josh

Gymnastics (A & G) while Josh takes C to do something active (skateboarding or something)

Meal plan / groceries

Work on organizing my Sunday Basket (I’ve had one and have been using it, but until last weekend had not procured a working label maker to set up my tabs. Now I have one!)

Clean out gmail

Work on Fall Reading List (my current 2021 reading list is kind of a mess)

We have always done a little bit of screen time first thing in the morning on Saturdays (when they were little, they would drink a yogurt/milk smoothie in a cup with a lid on the couch and watch a show). This would allow them to have a slower start to the morning without diving into “playing” (and loudness and messes…) full on right away, and gave us some time to ourselves in the morning too. Win win. I think you do a bigger block of screen time in the afternoon, so maybe you wouldn’t want to move any/add more, though- not sure. It has always worked well for us however!

I highly recommend Liane Moriarty’s new novel, Apples Never Fall. I just finished it and enjoyed it. There are so many great details in this one and it may be my favorite of all of her books. Can’t wait to see your fall list!

Oohhhh! I love her books. Absolutely adding this, I feel like I need something fun like that to read bc the one I am reading now is good but super dark and depressing so far ….

I loved that show, too. TGIF was the best! I long for the days when my kids sleep in – or sleep through the night. The baby was but has regressed this month and has a cold now so is waking up a ton. I’m tired!

I hope you have a great Saturday!!

Not that you need more book recommendations but I just read The People We Keep by Allison Larkin and it was so good! I don’t typically cry when I read books, but this had such great characters that they did bring me to happy tears a few times.

Oh, I loved those TGIF nights too!! Now that Ted Lasso comes out with a new one each Friday night, I feel like I get that spirit of TGIF all over again as an adult! Love these book recommendations…. getting my Fall library book reserve list in order now too!

My kids wake up by 6 any day of the week! So Saturdays are our screen time morning. One of us runs and one of us works out at home, while the kids watch a movie together. I need to get my workout and some housework done on Saturdays, so it’s really the only way so that both parents can have some time to workout before the soccer/errand/birthday party conveyor belt starts.
