BLP #94: Planning Your Summer

May 16, 2022

First Up: Planner Peace

This one comes from Cindy:

Like the person who sent in her set up, I too use the MakseLife 1 year (vertical layout) planner along with a separate quarterly daily planner.

Writing things in the daily with the Monthly/Weekly spread in front of me feels more comfortable to me, instead of having to flip back and forth (as in the Hobonichi, which I used last year).

An added bonus, the flexibility to move onto a new daily planner or keep the same one.

I used the Full Focus last quarter – I really liked the concept but don’t think I made as much use as I could have with the Weekly Review. The rolling quarters portion was helpful but frustrating because one needs to copy it once the planner runs out. I use it to record work-related things (e.g., lectures given, etc) that I might want to transfer to my CV or to keep track of required training hours (e.g., DEI). So I created my version at the end of the MakseLife 1 year planner.

I am currently using an older version of the Passion Planner daily. A draw for both of these planners is the 2-page daily spread. Next up is the MakseLife daily (which only has 1 page per day). Considering Cal Newports Time Block planner after that.

Cindy, physician & parent

Love this and totally agree with a separate weekly vs daily planner for the reasons listed above. Also, will be curious to see what Cal’s TBP 2.0 will look like!

Planning Your Summer

I had a lot of fun brainstorming the notes for this episode. Each quintile really has its own flavor, and summer to me = more relaxation, more social time, more travel, and more fun.

Some ideas for you to ponder as you think about your 3rd Quintile (or however you like to define your Summer Months!):

  • When will you plan?
  • Summer things to consider: summer reading, summer wardrobe (yourself + kids if applicable!), childcare & summer schedule, social outings, 1:1 parent days
  • Travel & events that are especially fun in the summer – outdoor restaurants, festivals, 4th of July for our US listeners
  • Weather-aligned fitness goals
  • Changes in work habits, or special summer projects
  • Summer planning styles!

In the episode, I also review some of my own summer goals & plans. Lots of fun to think about!

One of our favorite summer traditions: Amelia Island

You know I’ve mentally been in summer mode for awhile 🙂 I was away for a writing retreat last week and it was such a good way of getting refocused on research after teaching.

Our travel is all booked for summer – a few nights in an eco bothy on a farm, kiddo + me to Portugal to hang with grandparents, swim, ride bikes, and read books on the porch, and a beach trip with the 2nd cousins once removed (which feels like a tangential relationship but they are our faves).

My son turns 5 AND starts school in mid-August, so we need to figure out some sort of birthday shenanigans, but trying to keep everything else pretty mellow. We’ll have childcare all summer, and I’ll travel less, so hoping for lots of dinners in the garden, bike rides, gardening, and finishing off some house projects (we need to strip the wallpaper from the sitting room and get it decorated, and refinish the stairs).

My younger daughter will finish school on Friday forever! Just 7 exams over the next few weeks until the last on the 16th June. Then she has until results day on 18th August and assuming she gets her grades until the end of September before starting at university. We have loads of plans for this time, but unfortunately I am still going to have to work during much of it. I really feel I need to be very intentional and focussed or this special time will evaporate and before I know it I will have an empty nest in the autumn! I really do need to plan this summer!

I’ve been in the UK for 11 years and it never fails to astonish me that you don’t know where you are going to university until a month before.

Good luck to your daughter with her a-levels! I am teaching first year modules, and they’ve just had a rough time of things. Hoping for some more stability over the coming years.

Summer is a state of mind and a very fun one it is.I’m really excited for summer planning, I already listed some ideas, there’s a Jazz festival in July (though unfortunately the program wasn’t published yet) and I want to try SUP surfing (this is on my list from last year when I thought about it at the end of summer when it was too late). I like the idea of a list of movies to watch since Disney plus will arrive to Israel on June and I already know I want to watch the Star Wars movies and some of the newer animation movies which I haven’t seen.

Loved your podcast episode about summer planning. I’m interested in your quarter planning system. I only heard part of what you said about the nontraditional way you split them
