Radio silence on my end over here because I’ve been in NC enjoying family time + celebrating my niece Miriam’s 3rd birthday!
It was such a fun trip. I think I made the right decision to bring A alone — we had a great time and she was truly helpful with M and at the party.
We were here less than 48 hours but it was packed with fun family stuff and I am very glad we came. As usual, I always feel the urge to move back every time I return to the Triangle. It helped the weather was fantastic – two ~60F days and mornings perfect for running.
PS: I tried the car rental app Turo for the first time – it’s like Airbnb for rentals; you sign up to basically rent from an individual and pick it up from their home or neutral location. Obviously this was n=1 but it was really easy and I would do it again. I also did it rather last minute (I know, unlike me!) and was happy to find an available car at a decent location and price (like $49/day – definitely cheaper than a regular rental, and the car I got was a 2023 Hyundai Kona – I thought it was great!).
Speaking of running: Workout Report
M: Run with friends, ~4.1 mi total, 9:00-9:15 pace for the 3 middle miles with friends, slower there and back + 20 minutes upper body strength
T: 9 mi cutdown, 1.5 warmup @ 11:12/mi, then miles 10:07, 10:00, 9:39, 9:30, 9:10, 9:09, cooldown 11:16/mi. I was a little disappointed in this run, was supposed to be ~20s/mile faster. 66F / 86%
W: 4 mi @ 10:44/mi + 20 min strength for runners
F: 9 mi, felt really good – finally rested/over viral fatigue. First ~5 mi at 10:15/mi, last 4 at ~9:45/mi. 62F / 74%
S: 6.5 mi in Cary NC, 9:48/mi with rolling hills. 59F / 37% – felt amazing. (I find the FL temperatures more challenging than NC hills, apparently)
S: 5 mi in Cary NC, 9:40/mi some hills again. 35F (!!!) / 81%. I LOVE LOVE LOVE running in these temperatures and truly miss it so much.
Total = 37 mi / strength x 2 20 minute sessions
As someone who lives in the area (Chapel Hill), I love reading this complimentary post! Glad it was a good trip and that NC is still special to you 🙂
The family genetics are strong in the girls! Mia is adorable in her astronaut suit
We’ve used Turo a bunch and it’s been really awesome. It’s a bit tricky if you’re in a city where Turo isn’t allowed to operate at the airport, but we’ve figured it out easily each time.
That’s really amazing to see the data on how the FL temperatures impact your runs. Running or not, do you think you guys would ever move back up north? (“North” being relative of course!)
Annabel wants to, ha! I wouldn’t rule it out but the longer we are in FL the more I feel kind of … settled there and we do have so much family close! I also wonder whether it would be hard to find a job like the one I have now (60% but I feel like a full member of the team despite the part time status). The running environment is superior but I guess maybe heat training can be a secret weapon for cool destination races? Let’s hope!
What a fun weekend! I can’t believe your niece is 3 already! She is so cute and I can see a family resemblance! So nice to run in some milder temps. It seems like you are having an especially warm winter!! We have had a mild weather temp-wise except for this weekend when it’s been super cold. Like below 0 with the windchill. Luckily it warms back up next week! I won’t run when it’s sub-zero in the morning so probably won’t run until next weekend.
Oh fun! I love when there is such a clear family resemblance! And style!
Love that playground! The accessibility pieces are great for toddlers too.
Next time you’re there, check out Milk Lab across the street. Super fun rolled icecream.
Oh no wrong one! I thought that was the one in Cary 😆
I feel like I recognize this playground but I can’t place it. 🙂 Glad you had a great time!
Sassafrass (might also have laurel something name) in Raleigh!
Yes!! Such a good one!!
I love the fact that the Floridians are bundled like it’s the depths of winter and the North Carolinians are running around without jackets. Classic weather divide. 😂
