BLP Ep #197: Those Projects That Won’t Go Away

May 6, 2024

Show Notes + Link

Do you ever have a project that seems to pop up on your annual goals list year after year, but never gets done? Today’s episode is an exploration of how to tackle these projects and goals. On the episode, I share my own challenges around Big Daunting Projects and some questions that might be worth asking about things that show up again and again (and again) on yearly lists.

Questions to ask yourself when it comes to these big (and possibly scary, or emotionally difficulty) goals:

  1. DO YOU REALLY WANT TO DO IT?
  2. DO YOU HAVE TIME for said project? If so, specifically where? If you can’t come up with calendar space to work on it . . . you probably don’t have time. (Weekly template can also help with this when it comes to habits!)
    a) HOW MUCH TIME would you need to work on it, estimated, to make SOMETHING happen?
    b) If that’s more than you have, DOES IT BELONG in someday maybe?
  3. IS THERE A WAY of BRINGING IN DEADLINES even if not naturally there?
  4. IS THERE A NATURAL WAY TO BREAK IT UP into less scary pieces?
  5. CAN YOU MAKE IT LESS SCARY from an emotional standpoint?
  6. CAN YOU GET HELP WITH IT? (Maybe even just a little bit of help?)
  7. CAN YOU FIND ACCOUNTABILITY?

This was a good episode and I’m so glad you’ve got a plan for estate planning.
At work, writing a book is my big daunting project, but I’ve made tons of progress in recent months, on the data collection at least.

And at home, it’s decluttering, I’m pretty minimalist but I feel like I’ve spent the last few months hanging on for dear life, and I know there are things that can be easier. I saw a genius idea online, to put a clear shoe hanger on the back of the door and use it for extra shampoos, bandaids etc. And I feel like this would make a huge difference. Our bathroom door isn’t visible from the room because of a slightly strange layout, so it wouldn’t even create visible clutter.

Happy to be a Sunday 20 minute decluttering accountability buddy. I did my son’s room while on a really boring conference call the other day, and a project which felt daunting really took about 45 focused minutes.

It feels like a manageable amount. I always think it’ll take me an hour to deal with a cupboard or a shelf, but really a ton of progress can be made with podcast + 20 minutes.

My family is away for 3 nights next week and I’m going to tackle the big stuff but want to do a weekly 20 minutes to keep up with stuff and tackle those annoying tasks I never seem to get to.

Have you seen Shira Gill’s work? She has a really lovely book called Minimalista that explains her approach to organizing including the why and the how. It’s a gorgeous book, her website also has some resources and posts to explore
