Ep #251: Mini-Review of Kendra Adachi’s Playbooks + Planner Peace from A Completist Listener

May 19, 2025

In today’s episode, I open with a detailed Planner Peace submission (from a listener who listened to all 250 episodes of the BLP back catalog!) and provides a mini-review of Kendra Adachi‘s The Playbook, designed to be planner companions for each season, rather than planners themselves!

Next, a listener with a new baby wonders whether it makes sense to carry her paper planner up and down the stairs vs make the switch to digital.

Finally, this is my birthday week! If you’d like to celebrate with me, leave a review on your favorite podcast app, or preorder Best Laid Plans: A Simple System for Living a Life That You Love (Amazon, Target, Bookshop). PS – THE COVER IS DONE AND I LOVE IT SO MUCH!! I can’t wait to share it soon.

I consider both your review of Ms. Kendra Adachi‘s The Playbook and the Planner Peace submission from our fellow listener to be useful, Dr. Sarah Hart-Unger. Although, to be honest, I myself only use blank paper notebooks to make plans. Nevertheless, when one makes plans on being loyal to and supporting the planner makers that you mentioned in this episode, I think that is an example of planning for goals that are related to planning.
I don’t think I have suggestions for topics for future episodes, Dr. Sarah Hart-Unger. There are various topics that I’d like to discuss with you, but I don’t think any of them is worth doing a whole episode on.
I listen to Best Laid Plans, Best of Both Worlds, Happier with Gretchen Rubin, Organize 365, or any other podcasts that I listen to at whatever each podcast’s original speed is. I don’t listen to any podcasts at 2x speeds or 1.5x speeds. Of course, I don’t listen to any podcasts at 0.5x speeds, either.

Hi Sarah, re the question about paper planner being upstairs and remembering what to add. I struggle with this when I’m out and about as I don’t take my planner with me. My solution is to use iPhone reminders with Siri, eg. “hey siri, remind me at 5pm today to add to my planner that my kids have cross country next Fri”. I find it’s best to set the reminders for the same time each day then I can bulk add whatever has come up into my planner. Or if I postpone the reminder and it reminds me the next next day it is at the same time as any new ones I’ve entered.

ooh this is great! I will share!!

A few years ago, I left my planner unattended in my living room for about ten minutes, which turns out to be long enough for a toddler to scribble on every single page. Since then, my planner has lived at my desk, even though my kids are now (I think?) too old for random scribbling.

I live in a fairly compact, stair-free apartment, but I still sometimes feel “stuck” in the kitchen or another area where I can’t access my planner. So if I have things I need to remember or do, I’ll copy them onto a sticky or notepad, which I put on the kitchen counter or attach to my phone. I also keep a pad of sticky notes in the kitchen and one in my bedroom so I can jot things down when I’m in those places and eventually take them back to my planner. As a bonus, this has given me an excuse to “invest” in a variety of stickies in various sizes, colors, etc.
