Frivolous Planner Things

August 27, 2026

HOBONICHI ORDERS OPEN UP MONDAY NIGHT! I’m excited, and thinking hard about my 2027 Planner Stack. I have to say I was pretty darn consistent with my tools this year, and that makes me happy! The only big swap I made was to ditch my Cousin for a small 18-month planner and moved my daily pages to an MD notebook. That said, I put that notebook in the same cover I was using next to my 2026 Day Free, so it doesn’t even feel terribly jarring.

I am thinking about *not* ordering a Cousin for the first time next year and instead sticking with the setup of:

  • Small planner for calendaring – now, I could absolutely just stay in the one I am using. And maybe I will. But I also love the idea of trying a Weeks for this. I used to feel like I “needed” to see my weekly layout in a vertical weekly format, but the current experiment is showing me that this isn’t totally necessary. And it’s nice to have a pure “scheduling” (SOURCE OF TRUTH) book that is very compact.
  • A5 cover with a Day Free (for habit tracking, random lists) + MD Notebook (for daily pages). This is what I have now and I love the SPAAAAACE those big daily spreads provide. It’s TOTALLY extra, and TOTALLY unnecessary, but it makes me happy so who cares. (#thisis46).
  • Weeks for health/fitness. I kept mine up all year this year so far after attempting to do this for years. Not sure what finally made it stick, but I’m into it! I keep macros, workout stats, sleep, other medical things in there. I have not shared pages from this because (sorry) it feels a little too personal, but I love having it and plan on doing it again in 2027.
  • Monthly to visualize my month. Historically I’ve used the Amanda’s Favorites from Ashley Shelly and I will probably do that again BUT I could probably skip this (sad, but true) if I instead do this in the first planner listed above. I LOVE her stuff though so it’s possible I will still feel pulled to order one!
  • My own pdfs/planners for brainstorming and writing out goals lists; I love printing the Planning By Season workbook in A5 size, I’m working on a Nested Goals workbook, and I always use one of the BLP Live workbooks, too! These are more for thinking and reflecting and I really do love using them to guide them through my own planning.
  • Midori Hibino A6 size – LOVED using this for daily journaling (morning pages style) this year. A tiny part of me is thinking I will downsize to a Hobonichi A6 (maybe a HON?) that gives me one A6 page vs the two I’ve been using this year. Sometimes (often) I feel like one is enough . . .

I was going to talk about digital things I use, but we’ll save that for a later post.

HOBONICHI COVERS I AM OGLING (all pix from their site)

Blackthorn

Petit Bloom

Felice (Mina Perhonen) –> probably my favorite but also the priciest

Vine (A6 HON)

Petit Bloom (Weeks)

Forest Green (Weeks)

Not getting them all, don’t worry! But having fun deciding.

(And yes this is a major indulgence of mine! I have no designer bags or ‘real’ jewelry other than my wedding ring but Hobonichi covers are my favorite! And while I don’t usually keep my planners, I have saved almost all of the covers I have used over the years. It’s a fun collection.)

Planner season makes me so happy that it almost needs a quintile, haha. Love your picks SHU!

Do you think you should add one of those little green vertical weekly supplementary calendars to your order just in case you miss vertical layouts?

I used a Weeks as a source of truth this year and the portability was exactly what I needed to be able to make the concept work in analogue form. I still enjoy vertical though, so most weeks I use both so that I can do a rough time block oxo

YOU READ MY MIND (which is not a surprise Jane!!!). I am thinking of doing just that! I even though about tucking the little A6 insert into the cover of my A5 ๐Ÿ™‚ ๐Ÿ™‚ ๐Ÿ™‚

I am planning to order a Hobonichi for the first time! I have been using Ink and Volt the last 4-5 years and like a lot about it but am wasting a lot of space and donโ€™t like having to flip around so much to see goals and lists. So am planning to try the Weeks plus a separate notebook for goals and lists. I am worried about the Weeks being *too small* but most of my days are clinical and pretty well set in terms of my schedule so I think it will be ok. Also not sure about Tomo River paper, but donโ€™t do much decorating and care most about functionality so I think it will be ok too. Wish me luck!

oh wow Amanda – I’m so excited for you! The Weeks can fit A TON of data. The ONLY issue would be if you use thick pens or write really big.
