the other underwear drawer
no, this time i’m not referring to michelle‘s famous medical blog (though if you’re looking for some snark in the comments, check out yesterday’s post! yowza.)
no — i am speaking of (and therefore mentioning) the unmentionables in your very own actual underwear drawer, and i am extending the topic to pajamas/loungewear.
as i write this, i am wearing a pair of old scrubs and an ugly and now slightly heartbreaking T-shirt from the NC half marathon in 2009. want proof? fine. good morning.
ignore the mirror image — mac’s photobooth does that and i don’t know how to reverse it!
yes, those are running chairs on it . . . (you know, NC? furniture capitol of the world? yeah . . .). i am proud to say that my victoria’s secret pair underneath does not date back to college, but there are definitely some items in the aforementioned drawers that do.
and you know what? that is unacceptable. i am (gulp) 30 years old. i work for a living and earn an actual salary. and therefore, i do not need to dress in rags, even if i (and josh) are the only ones that see this side of my, uhh, wardrobe.
i read this post from smallnotebook and felt empowered, so i thought i might pass on the love to all of you. it’s time to own up and take action — in this one small (but important) area of your life!
my holiday gift this year from josh was three sets of VS pajamas/loungewear (yes, he’s the best!), and i am determined to wear them and NOT hang out in scrubs and T-shirts with chairs on them (as soon as i get the pants hemmed to fit my short limbs). i also plan on taking action this weekend and doing what small notebook suggests, which might involve a trip to gapbody or VS to fill in the gaps.
some online options to inspire:
starting out simple:
pocket roll-up pants from gapbody, $29.50
soft and comfortable-looking pure body cami to go with
a little sassier
this lace-trim romper (also gapbody) might be worth the experiment, on sale for $14.50!
yoga style
i actually really like foldover yoga pants as loungewear — they make me feel graceful and sometimes inspire impromptu vinyasas while cooking dinner. i joked about the $98 version from lululemon recently, and while i’m sure they are wonderful (and probably last a long time), i actually really like these cheap(er) knockoffs from VS:
foldover pants, replete with ridiculous come-hither post . . . rather un-yoga, if you ask me.
at 2/$50, they are quite reasonable AND they come in different lengths — no hemming required pour moi! i own two pairs and am considering expanding my collection.
and of course, there’s anthro . . .
LOVE this at-ease set!
lounge around after work in a silk semarang robe? why ever not!?
so spill: what’s the oldest piece of loungewear/underwear in your drawers? i have a fords cheerleading (i went to haverford high, so that was our mascot) tee that i believe dates back to 1994. yeah!

i made this cooking light recipe for myself last night (josh had a residency interview dinner) and it was quite an easy undertaking. furthermore, it was tasty! i added parmesan cheese in lieu of yogurt because i feel that nothing is better with bacon (other than more bacon, of course) than cheese.
served straight up with a slice of sunflower toast on the side

During the major snow here just before Christmas I killed a pair of socks wearing them over shoes (to prevent slippage) that I'd had since about 1989 so I was pleased they went out with a bang! Glad to read your post today – this drawer is ON MY LIST to declutter this year…..
I love VS yoga pants (i'm also on the short side) but I wear those all the time! Sadly I still have underwear in my drawer that probably date back to my junior high or 6th grade year (yikes!) I'm now in my 3rd year of college.
I've got a Chatham Park tee from 5th grade I still bust out from time to time. 🙂
i have stuff from the 60's
cute morning pic….even w/the running chairs! sheesh, reading thru the comments makes me realize i probably have items in my underwear drawer older than you and/or some of your readers! hah! kidding…..i think??? i really don't want to do the math.
Great post! And wow, super snarky at the medical blog!
I try to periodically clean out my underwear drawer. Sometime in the last year, my husband asked how many pairs I had. I counted (AFTER) throwing some away, and had about 60. yikes. Many were still from college (6-9 years ago). In my defense, there were a variety of colors and styles (dark and light, thong to hipster). I have since tried to weed out more. When I get new bras I try to get a nice looking matchy pair of underwear, but it can be hard because there aren't always a lot of colors of bras for me to pick from at Gap (which I've decided I like better for bras than VS due to quality, fit and price).
Most of my pj's are flannel or cotton pants from ON or Gap + a tank top, not too many matchy matchy sets. Glad to hear you like the VS yoga pants. While I love lulu for their running stuff, I can't spend $98 on a single pair of lounge pants!
stacy: AHHHHH CHATAM PARK!! i told kara about this at dinner tonight and we cracked up 🙂
Ahh yes, yoga pants, my "dressy" lounge wear. Sometimes I even pair them with an actual sweater that you might wear with jeans (as opposed to an oversized tee or a fleece.)
I have a t-shirt from my 5th grade softball team that I still wear. It has my last name on the back and everything!!
