Hi. I am pretty sure I am the only one who would notice, but I broke my daily blogging streak yesterday. Also flossing / skincare. I have some nasty fever/nausea thing that completely put me out of commission yesterday — I arrived home, begged our nanny to stay until Josh got home, and then went to bed at 6pm.
It is now 12 hours later and I still have nausea + a low grade fever but am probably going to go to work because really the culture in medicine is not to stay home unless you are septic or uncontrollably releasing bodily fluids, none of which apply (yet).
BAH! I HATE BEING SICK.

I’m sorry you’re feeling so crappy but I had to laugh at the "unless you are septic or uncontrollably releasing bodily fluids" comment. Even then, there’s a suggestion that perhaps you try a mask or a diaper…Feel better.
I hope it passes soon! And yes, that is absolutely the culture in medicine and it is NOT solely driven by doctors—I showed up to clinic once, febrile and wearing a mask because I was coughing so much and every patient was all "THANK GOD you didn’t cancel our appointment!" really? no one even had any real issues. lots of reassurance/worried well, and yet couldn’t stand the idea of being inconvenienced.
I hope you are feeling better soon! Im glad the nanny could stay so you could get some sleep; parenting while sick is miserable.
I actually cancelled clinic for the first time ever today due to high fevers, horrible body aches, and fatigue. It felt like such a grown up decision – and somewhat counterculture. And truthfully, the last thing my copd and interstitial lung disease patients need is a good ole case of rsv from their doctor!
Hope you feel better soon!!

Hi Sarah, I’m a long time reader but have never commented before. I’m a Mom to a toddler and pediatric resident (aka I always have at least a low grade viral illness) and have been struggling more and more with this notion of doctors never being allowed to take a sick day. Your forays with mindfulness resonate with me strongly, and I feel like not taking care of ourselves is so counterintuitive to this. I’d love to say I have the energy to change the culture from the ground up, but mostly I just need to go to bed. Any thoughts are appreciated! -lily
