backpack conquest

August 10, 2017

Thank you for all the fantastic Q&A submitted to the last post, my email, and Instagram!  Episode Recording Day (yes, that’s in all capitals because I was EXCITED) went really well, and I’m hoping we’ll be able to release in just a couple of weeks!  More details to follow, of course, when we have the actual launch date finalized.

I had yesterday off, and besides giving my vocal cords a workout it was a nice refreshing mid-week break.  My day off each week rotates — or actually it just depends on when I schedule it.  It takes more maneuvering, but I much prefer it this way so that I can work around kid-related activities and also work meetings (i.e. make sure NOT to be off when I know I have an important meeting to run or attend!).   I also kind of like the variety – Fridays are lovely for that long weekend feeling, but sometimes breaking up the work week feels good too.

Activities on my day off yesterday:
✔︎ Slept in (until 6 am or so . . . yes this counts)

✔︎ Podcast recording!

✔︎ Barre3 workout

✔︎ Took Annabel on solo outing to buy backpack for school.  We looked at Target, but I just couldn’t let her take home a Barbie monstrosity that looked like it would fall apart in 30 seconds.  We made a deal — I let her take home a Descendents doll and she let me offer her an array of backpacks to choose from online.  She picked this one:

festooned with puppies
She was happy and so was I (because I won’t have to stare at plastic Barbie for the next 9 months or however long that one was going to last!).  I’m now 99% done with back to school shopping (C is going to just reuse his Skip Hop backpack from last year – sorry dude, it’s still in good shape!) and just need to get A a new water bottle for her lunch box.  Oh, and pick up uniforms for her (which don’t go on sale until next week even though school starts the 21st!).  Whew!

Up for debate:  Monogramming with first name, yay or nay?  Valid safety concern or not?  Josh was strongly opposed so we did initials (which I was fine with — and not something I wanted to fight over!) but just curious 🙂
I also got to hang out with Josh, who came home on the early-ish side (8 pm) and read some of Loner, which is this month’s book club selection.  Thus far I like it but I can tell it’s going to take a turn for the disturbing . . . at least that’s likely to make good fodder for discussion.
Off to run!

I like a monogram or initials. The safety part isn’t concerning to me. Their name is likely to be somewhere in or on their bag or lunch anyway. It’s cute!

You will be so happy with the PB backpacks. Both my girls have them and they hold up really well. You can also wash them on gentle cycle and let them air dry! We did the first name monogram.

I don’t think the safety concern about names on backpacks is invalid, but it’s also not one that has a lot of weight for me in our circumstances — our kindergarten kid is going to be walking to the bus with a parent, getting off the bus on school grounds, and then going from class to the on-premises after school program, and from there straight into my car. So opportunities for a stranger to trick her into thinking they’re acquainted seem very slim. I imagine I’d weight the safety concern more if were taking public transit or she was walking without a parent.

I’m skipping embroidery, though, because I can also see her tiring of the backpack while it still has useful life, and giving it to someone else isn’t as easy with embroidered names or initials. (Also we got it at Marshall’s and so getting it embroidered would be a hassle. It’s awesome, though, a space-themed black one with planets in her favorite colors of pink and purple. Her first choice was a Shopkins one but I was able to convince her to settle for her second choice because it had better pockets and a good spot to clip her bus pass to.)

I can’t wait to find out who your co-host is- well, I am just really excited about your podcast in general!

I like initials only! My son is 5 and has had the same Marmot backpack since he was 2. It’s in great shape and we still use it. I am thinking of getting my boys pottery barn suitcases for Christmas since we travel a lot and they seem sturdy and kid friendly.

My 5 year old niece just picked out a purple, butterfly-emblazoned backpack from PB for kindergarten. Love all the prints they offer!
We have opted not to personalize Caleb’s backpack, just his lunchbox which goes inside the backpack during drop off/pickup. Im with Josh on this one–I much prefer initials only, at least until Caleb is old enough to understand "stranger danger."

Emerson got the aqua one with the dogs on it. My SIL that’s a second grade teacher got it for her, so I trust it’ll be "cool" 😉 Pottery barn is great quality. I can’t believe they are going to K!

PS: she monogrammed her full firsts name on it. I’m unconcerned

I definitely wouldn’t do first name for things like clothes that will be worn at the park, but a backpack for school is a bit different. But as they get older (and can go out independently) I wouldn’t choose to put it on their bag either!

We went with PB kids too! G picked out the green and grey striped one and then got a t-Rex embroidery on it and the lunch box. We did get his name on it because I think going to school is not like going somewhere public (and we’re in the walk zone so he’ll not be using a bus until middle school) because we thought he would recognize that better than initials in case someone has a similar backpack.

I think I have an idea who your podcast cohost is, but can’t wait to find out!

So, totally unrelated to your list above BUT- i know you’re considering switching from Hobonichi, and I started thinking about switching too. I’ve done IWP and just didn’t love all the color. I came across She Plans, and it looks really pretty, simply, and functional. I was looking at golden coil as you suggested and it looks amazing too but just another option to put out there 🙂
