January 10, 2019

Hello from WordPress land! After many years of procrastination, we are here. I did not do it on my own (at all) – I worked with Amanda (find her site here).

I was going for a clean, fairly minimal look but I definitely wanted to keep my beautiful shubox graphic (designed by my college roommate and friend since those days, Azusa Kobayashi). I am excited to be in this new realm and I now have SO much to do to optimize the site! On the positive side, Amanda has tagged some of my newer posts for me (so you can click on the category “planner review”, for example, and see all of those posts here!).

However, I also have my work cut out for me.

To do:

a) Figuring out how to actually navigate this new posting window — man, after 14 years drafting in blogger I feel like I’m on foreign soil!

b) Updating old pages! I elected to just launch the blog prior to finishing up because I didn’t want to delay any longer, but I definitely need to bring those pages up to date now!

c) Learning all of the new tools available in WordPress, including (the dreaded) SEO. I’d also like to be able to launch a newsletter to start a mailing list, which is probably its own learning curve.

d) Likely switching to a new ad network as I’ve heard through the grapevine that this will help me keep more of the revenue that the site earns. (Please know I do not make a significant profit on this blog, but I’d like to at least earn enough to pay for hosting / occasional upgrades and to feel like the time I devote to this endeavor is worth something tangible).

WHEW! I hope the new look resonates with you! The commenting mechanism may also change, as IntenseDebate is being phased out and so I may move to Disqus (as long as I can keep my old comments! They are precious and I refuse to leave them behind!).

In case you are curious: this blog has been around for 14 years, accumulating > 4 million pages over the course of 2979 posts. Here are some antique headers for you:

This blog used to be called “ghost world” and was accessed at the url lostandallalone.com (!)

another iteration. I don’t remember when each of these were used, but they definitely both look familiar!

Let me know what you think (although please note this is still a work in progress)! One thing I am wondering: is the font size too small? Now that I see it up live, I am a little worried the text appears less readable than it did on blogger. I’m not sure it’s changeable within the template, but I can definitely find out.

Over the course of this month, I am going to work on updating the various ‘pages’ and will let you know when they have been modernized in case anyone cares to browse through ‘family’ ‘running’ ‘organization’ etc.

Yay. Looks like the old site but more modern. Text size fine for me

Hi! Love the new look, but yes I think the font is a little tiny bit small. Also, when I first went to your site, it said -error- and then two seconds later, redirected me here. BUT, love it! Congrats on the “move”!

Love the new look! Font is a little small, but not unreadable by any means πŸ™‚

    • Reply Sarah Hart-Unger January 11, 2019 at 10:53 am

Thanks! We are definitely going to enlarge the font size πŸ™‚

    It’s beautiful! Congratulations!!!

It looks great! I would say that the font could be a tad bigger…no problems reading it but the old one was more “readable”.

Thanks! We are definitely going to enlarge the font size πŸ™‚

Hi! Your new site is lovely! Congratulations on a job well done πŸ™‚ I don’t think the font is too small. Good luck navigating these fun, new changes!

I think it looks so fresh and clean! And for me personally, yes, the font is a little too small. <3 But it may just be me. I have only been putting off my eye exam for a year, I mean, psh. πŸ˜‰ <3 <3

Ooh I love it, and the new tagline. I don’t think it’s too small.

    Great updated site!

Font is bit small for me too — but not unreadable. One comment — the text after “Here are some antique headers for you:” is covered up by ads and then resumes again at “another iteration”. I am using Chrome to view the page.

    • Reply SHU January 10, 2019 at 7:45 pm

weird! I can see the 2 old headers, not ads – you are seeing blogher ads there? I’ve never put ads in the middle of the page (at least not on purpose!)

    • Reply Sara January 10, 2019 at 10:18 pm

Are you sure they are ads? I thought the same thing at first but the two graphics that I see there (using Chrome) are old headers from Sarah’s blog. They both have the words “ghost world” on them.

Blog looks great, Sarah! I like that you kept the same graphic and general feel but modernized it. I’m in the “font is a little small” camp.

      • Reply gem January 12, 2019 at 12:29 am

Good heavens! They looked like ads to me. You’re right. They’re the old headers. Thanks for catching that.

  • Reply Callie January 11, 2019 at 12:46 am

It looks nice, but I definitely think the font size is too small! I’d prefer a significantly bigger font size. πŸ™‚

    • Reply Sarah Hart-Unger January 11, 2019 at 10:54 am

YES needs to be bigger – apparently it’s doable so working on it!

  • Reply Krishna January 11, 2019 at 2:34 am

Congrats on the move to the new look – it looks wonderful. Would appreciate a bigger font size.

    • Reply Sarah Hart-Unger January 11, 2019 at 10:54 am

Thank you! Agree! Working on it!

  • Reply Cheryl January 11, 2019 at 5:07 am

One more vote for β€œthe font is a little small”, but I’ll be following you regardless, both here on the blog and on the podcast. I look forward to your updates!

    • Reply Sarah Hart-Unger January 11, 2019 at 10:53 am

Agree πŸ™‚ Working on enlarging it now!

  • Reply Dawn Burke January 11, 2019 at 3:34 pm

Looks wonderful–very clean and modern look πŸ™‚

  • Reply Christine January 12, 2019 at 7:17 am

I love it. Especially the addition of tags! I’ve been following ever since 2012 and I love how much your blog has grown but it’s still authentic and you! I hope you continue to share a lot with us. I am excited about a newsletter too! Super exciting! Congratulations!

Lovely new site – nice work πŸ™‚

Looks great! Pulls over to Feedly (where I read all my blogs) well – interestingly that fixes the font size too. Very impressed with your wordpress foray!

  • Reply Connie C January 14, 2019 at 1:00 am

Fresh and clean! Font a bit small tbh.

  • Reply Susannah Williams January 14, 2019 at 12:38 pm

Love the new look, Sarah! Also….would love to know what you are listening to–podcasts or music–these days. Always love your recommendations.

  • Reply Beth @ Parent Lightly January 14, 2019 at 5:58 pm

Oooo it looks great! πŸ™‚ I agree it would be even greater with a bigger font size. And maybe darker? It seems like it’s a gray. I had to play with mine a bunch to make sure it didn’t hurt my eyes….but I have terrible eyesight!
