Hello from WordPress land! After many years of procrastination, we are here. I did not do it on my own (at all) – I worked with Amanda (find her site here).
I was going for a clean, fairly minimal look but I definitely wanted to keep my beautiful shubox graphic (designed by my college roommate and friend since those days, Azusa Kobayashi). I am excited to be in this new realm and I now have SO much to do to optimize the site! On the positive side, Amanda has tagged some of my newer posts for me (so you can click on the category “planner review”, for example, and see all of those posts here!).
However, I also have my work cut out for me.
a) Figuring out how to actually navigate this new posting window — man, after 14 years drafting in blogger I feel like I’m on foreign soil!
b) Updating old pages! I elected to just launch the blog prior to finishing up because I didn’t want to delay any longer, but I definitely need to bring those pages up to date now!
c) Learning all of the new tools available in WordPress, including (the dreaded) SEO. I’d also like to be able to launch a newsletter to start a mailing list, which is probably its own learning curve.
d) Likely switching to a new ad network as I’ve heard through the grapevine that this will help me keep more of the revenue that the site earns. (Please know I do not make a significant profit on this blog, but I’d like to at least earn enough to pay for hosting / occasional upgrades and to feel like the time I devote to this endeavor is worth something tangible).
WHEW! I hope the new look resonates with you! The commenting mechanism may also change, as IntenseDebate is being phased out and so I may move to Disqus (as long as I can keep my old comments! They are precious and I refuse to leave them behind!).
In case you are curious: this blog has been around for 14 years, accumulating > 4 million pages over the course of 2979 posts. Here are some antique headers for you:
Let me know what you think (although please note this is still a work in progress)! One thing I am wondering: is the font size too small? Now that I see it up live, I am a little worried the text appears less readable than it did on blogger. I’m not sure it’s changeable within the template, but I can definitely find out.
Over the course of this month, I am going to work on updating the various ‘pages’ and will let you know when they have been modernized in case anyone cares to browse through ‘family’ ‘running’ ‘organization’ etc.
