So Much Media, So Little Time

September 17, 2019

Ooh, I love all of the book recs! Thank you. Adding several (including The Most Fun I Ever Had — wow, a 3x rec!) to the list. The Broward County library system is fantastic in that typically the hold lines move fast — but the tough part is that often you just get 3-4 weeks total (2 weeks + 1-2 1-week renewals) to read a book if others have it on reserve.

Which I guess is fair! One doesn’t need to hold on to 10 books at once in a beautiful stack just to admire 🙂

Even if this previous lovely blue stack was quite pleasing to look at

I suspect that when my kids are grown up, I will fill in the void with books. So many books, so little time! Or maybe I’ll actually watch more quality TV (currently I can handle one show per season, max).

(Which reminds me — This Is Us returns 9/24. YESSSS.)

Books. (My favorite.)

Podcasts. (My second favorite 🙂 )

Movies. (Not that I ever watch those anymore, for the most part.)

TV. (Because some of it really is great these days!)

Magazines. (Still kind of fun sometimes.)

Music. (Mostly in the car when I’m not in a podcast mood, but increasingly around the house for mood-setting purposes.)

Blogs. (If you’re cool like me and still read a select number of blogs like it’s 2010)

So much media, so little time. Reason #8247 (compelling to me) not to spend hours scrolling mindlessly. And actually – I have to say, I’ve been better about that recently! Ever since ruthlessly culling my personal Insta feed, I find the whole thing less compelling and feel like I’ve been able to strike a reasonable balance between dipping my toes in for some delicious distraction and putting the $*&@ thing away. I still tend to check my email more than is necessary (A & C will say “Mommy are you doing something dumb on your phone?” and often I will have to answer “yes . . .”).

Off to run!

My list of media from most to least favorite is very similar to yours. Books come first, but are almost tied with podcasts – I read books when I am sitting down, I listen to podcasts when I am on the go. Next I like TV, but only things on Amazon or Netflix. I’m really excited for “Modern Love” to release on Amazon Prime. It’s a new series based on the NYT Modern Love column. It looks really good! We do not have cable so we rarely watch live tv, except the news and the occasional sporting event. I like movies, but never see them in the theater and I go to bed so early that we usually choose a tv show over a movie.

I can’t remember if you’ve talked about this, but what do you think of audiobooks? I’m obsessed with Audible, especially since have a baby in May. Although I do sometimes find it hard to decide between a podcast and an audiobook.

I’ve done a few audiobooks, but for some reason I tend to gravitate towards podcasts when I’m going audio! (Or even just music if i’m in a more meditative mood). But I totally see the appeal!
