life Planners Reading

5 on a Friday

July 29, 2022

1- I did not finish everything on July’s list, but I read a lot of books!

My favorite was Lessons in Chemistry. Just thinking about the characters makes me smile right now. I also loved watching Ted Lasso! Cannot wait for Season 3.

I did not purchase earrings or a necklace. Instead, I spent all of my allowance on FIGS. At least now I have a functional on-call wardrobe.

2- It was fun to focus on playing just a couple of albums and getting to know them — Jimmie Allen and Soccer Mommy, which are two artists that have very little in common except that I heard them both on an All Songs Considered episode and liked them. I did enjoy them more and more as the month went on (though I am a lover of repetition)! Upon a rec from reader Lori, I also checked out the new Jack White and thought it was great. For August, I am going to focus on Brandi Carlile because Josh and I will be seeing her live in September!

3- I enjoyed this Lazy Genius episode featuring Ashley Brown on routines: listen here. I love thinking about routines — I feel like they almost can’t get enough attention.

4- I honestly can’t believe it’s August. I know I keep saying this but this summer by so fast. We will be school supply shopping this weekend and I have to order the kids’ uniforms! We have lists already sent for each grade level — I’m actually impressed at how minimal some of them are, but definitely not complaining.

And everyone needs SHOES. So many shoes . . . Florida actually has tax-free shopping for school supplies and clothes 7/25 – 8/7 so we will take advantage and I will try to make it fun (Josh is on call this weekend – so this will be a great activity).

5- Off to run. My running feels back to normal status post COVID — I did 2 minute intervals at 7:50-8:20 pace yesterday and they felt good. Feeling grateful. Plus it was “only” 76F which felt downright cool! 79 right now though.

What is your monthly allowance? We have finally started using a budgeting software and I think I’m finally ready to commit to some sort of guiderails on spending. Even if you don’t want to share the actual number, does your personal allowance include things like meals out, coffee, vacation related expenses? Or are these separate? Have a great weekend.

Eating alone goes to allowance and all clothing cosmetics books shoes guitar purchases (Josh) etc. I’m not going to share exact amount but it’s just over 1% of total gross income for each, and we get the same amount 🙂

I am glad you loved Lessons in Chemistry! Did you hear that Apple is making it into a show? I loved the characters so so much. It will certainly be in my top 5 books of 2022!

I see Brandi tomorrow!! I’m so excited. I don’t love the venue she’s performing at (which is the same place I saw Alanis last weekend – really living my best life these days!) but she’s become so popular that it would be hard to see her in the intimate venues she previously performed in. It’s on my bucket list to see her at Red Rocks some day, though!!

Here to say I saw Brandi at Newport Folk last weekend when she brought surprise guest Joni Mitchell! I’ve seen her a few times at the Folk Fest and she’s always amazing, so enjoy!

Seeing Brandi live was literally life changing for me. I regained feeling in my entire left side s at her concert after losing it years before in a terrible accident only blocks from the venue of her concert.Long story short, after hearing of my concert experience, she generously gifted me her wine (XOBC). Her book is also great, as is the album she’s touring now. I had tickets for the current tour, but gifted them to a friend when they conflicted with a ballet recital scheduled after I bought the tickets. Enjoy!

If you are missing Ted Lasso, I recommend Trying. Also on AppleTV+. Season 3 just started and it has the same vibe for me.

I went to a Brandi show a few years ago knowing maybe 2 of her songs and LOVED it – she’s a great performer, and even if you don’t know her music intimately, it’ll still be awesome! Now I’m obsessed.
