Sunday Reflections + Weekly Workout Report

October 2, 2022

Reflective Night + Chill Day

Last night Josh and I went to Yot to celebrate my transition. We had a new babysitter come who was great – excited about having another option for date night or weekend coverage! It was a reflective and interesting day, and we talked a lot about long term goals — a natural thing for the start of a a new financial quarter AND my career shift.

To some extent, I find myself leaning away from prior thoughts of FIRE (though I still love reading blogs/listening to podcasts in this realm – PoF and TPP are two faves!). We had done our quarterly financial reckoning (interestingly, the damage was not quite as bad as Q2 2022 but net worth was still down thanks to the stock market. At least we didn’t have crypto holdings!?). We have definitely had some lifestyle inflation in the following areas: the kids’ school, camp, activities, and travel. BUT while recognizing this is an incredibly privileged position, I am loathe to give up any of those things! So that leaves: cut back on other things (not terribly enticing), earn more, or work for longer. Or maybe a mix . . .

We didn’t make it to Trader Joe’s for our fall pilgrimage yesterday, so we will go today and return home for an All Things Pumpkin lunch! I’m excited. Later, I think Josh will take the kids swimming while I do my usual prep-for-the-week routine.

Workout Report

workout data for September. Even though I used to love my Garmin, I really appreciate the convenience of the Apple Watch!

M – 3 mi run @ 9:56/mi (77F / 92% humidity)

T – 4.4 miles on the treadmill (due to the tropical storm/hurricane), 0.5% incline – 1.5 mi warmup @ ~11:00/mi, then 1 min at speeds 8:00 – 8:20 pace alternating with 1 min jogs, then cooldown.

W – Peloton Strength – 30 min Callie full body workout

R – 5.3 mi total – 1 mi warmup @ 11:21/mi, 3 miles @ tempo – average 9:03/mi, ~1 mi cooldown. (76F / 88% humidity)

F – 4 miles easy @ 10:32/mi, a glorious 65F / 87% humidity

S – Peloton Strength – 30 min Rad Lopez full body + 20 min Kristen McGee yoga. Also a walk later (~2.5 mi)

S – Long run 8 mi @ 10:53/mi. Took it very relaxed + it felt great! 74F / ?? humidity because it’s not showing up for some reason.

Weekly Total = 24.7 mi / strength x 2 / yoga x 1. This is about right — just working on building mileage as I ramp up into eventual half marathon training for A1A!

We will do our 3Q review this week sometime. I am sure it won’t be very pretty. We are not in the heavy activity expense stage yet and travel is pretty limited but I know those expense buckets will change as our kids get older! I am interested in FIRE but mostly the FI part. I feel like one of us needs to keep working so we have great insurance. And we both really like our jobs so that helps. I know you guys do, too!

You had a solid week of workouts again! Way to go! I’m traveling again this week but am hoping to get a run in on Friday morning in Chicago. It’s one of my fave places to run!

Love the idea of a pumpkin lunch – could you share your menu please?

Our menu is downright silly 🙂 We had (all TJs): harvest soup (tomato with squash + pumpkin), pumpkin tortilla chips, pumpkin samosas (from the freezer section – quite delicious), and pumpkin Joe Joe’s cookies for dessert! NOT fancy but totally fun.

i haven’t checked my net worth after the stock market down because it’s a temporary thing while my savings are for the long term. there’s no point to worry about it when the goal is not short term. I’m also not ready to give up anything that gives me joy for the sake of higher saving rate. life is too short! 😉
solid week of training. I’m in a “rest” mode to give my body time to “heal” and avoid injury for the next cycle of training… but it’s so hard not to get the endorphin from running. counting my days! 🙂

What platform do you use to find new babysitters? Is it through referrals or care.com/Sittercity type sites?

This time it was just a recommendation from someone on our big (hospital system) physician WhatsApp thread.
