Somehow I am sick again. I have a not-COVID, not-FLU URI. And I am not thrilled about it. Honestly, I felt like I had to dig deep to be calm and accepting about the last bout of illness, but I felt like “well, at least I’m getting it over with!”.
Except that was only 3 weeks ago and my throat is filled with gunk and HELLO INTERFERONS are you sleeping on the job or something!? Last time I checked I am not a day care-attending toddler.
Anyway. Hopefully this will pass quickly. I am working on my attitude. I promise. On the bright side, just one more day of call! And I don’t have any overnight call until JUNE (my year is rather back-loaded and my April call week has other night/weekend coverage) so — that is pretty exciting.
WORKOUT REPORT:
M: 5 mi @ 9:44 ave, 69F 93% (no social run this week sadly!)
T: REST
W: 8 mi with 2 x 3 mi tempo blocks prescribed at ~9:00/mi (first 3-mi block ave 8:52/mi, second ave 8:59/mi); 3 minutes rest in between the blocks. 66F / 96%.
R: 4 mi @ 10:09/mi, 20 min full body strength (Andy Speer)
F: 7 mi total with 3 miles prescribed 9:30/mi – I ran them at 9:22, 9:12, 9:19. 64F / 99%
S: 6 mi @ 10:29/mi + 20 min upper body with Matty Maggiacomo
S: Was supposed to be 10 mi with 3 miles at tempo towards the end — but will be REST due to viral %*&$ again. Sad! I do want to do this run because I feel like it will give me confidence for the half marathon in 2 weeks so maybe mid-week next week especially since the only ‘long’ run scheduled next week is 8 mi.
Total miles: 30
Total strength: 2 x 20 min

I’m sorry you aren’t feeling well! You could definitely try to add the run in this week if you’re feeling up to it, but my coach says it’s always better to go into a race rested (or even undertrained, which you aren’t!) than overtrained. And training while sick can easily lead to overtraining. I hope you’re able to rest, hydrate and fuel well. I have a marathon the same day as your half and will be thinking of you!
Kristie which coach are you working with? Trying to decide which company to go with!
I run with a local group in Austin called Gilbert’s Gazelles. They don’t have a robust virtual program just yet. I listen to a podcast called Running Rogue, and it’s done by the head coach of another Austin run club. They have what sounds like a great virtual group. My friend moved out of state and continues to train with them and is having a lot of success. It looks like the group is closed right now, but I know they open periodically to add new members. Either way, the podcast is a great listen!

I think I am going with a group called Microcosm out of Colorado. Was that or McKirdy (which Chelsea has done really well with!) but I got excited about how Microcosm is structured so I think I will try that first.
Def add the run in this week. It will give you confidence for the main event in 2w. You can still run 8 over the weekend. I can’t believe your half is that soon!
Sorry that was me above (my phone had a seizure while I was posting).
Sorry to hear you’re sick again Sarah! Just interested if you’ve read any of the articles about covid causing longer-term immune disruption, and what you think? I know here in Australia everyone complained how sick they were last winter with non-covid illnesses (in addition to covid), and I wonder if there’s something to these claims. Or perhaps we are just noticing it more after a couple of years of minimal illness due to physical distancing!
Not sure, but had omicron July 2022 and zero illnesses (despite plenty of exposure) until Jan 23!
Hmm that’s true! Maybe it’s just bad luck. Well I hope this illness is short-lived. 🙂
Ugh that really sucks. I feel your pain as that is how I was for most of the fall. I have one non-Covid URI after another. After something like my 5th virus I questioned if there was a URI I hadn’t had yet… maybe your immune system was a bit depleted after battling Covid and the flu so this virus snuck in? I hope you are healthy going forward, especially with your race coming up soon! I’d see how you feel and play it by ear this week on whether to add a longer run back in.
Ugh! I’m so sorry. I hope your’e feeling better soon.
that really sucks! maybe it’s caused by disrupted sleep during call week? hope you get over it soon. your attitude is great! nothing to do but to stay positive and sit it out right?
ohhhh, my attitude is TERRIBLE. if it comes across as great in these posts . . . I am pretending. Lol.
and yes – I have gotten sick many times on call. The constant stress/high alert state and interrupted sleep are not great.
