5 on a Friday: Random Assortment Edition

January 26, 2024

1- “ANYWAYS . . . ” — I recently noticed that everyone (not just my tween . . .) is saying “anyways.” It came up in conversation with a millennial colleague and sounded very natural rolling off her tongue but I always think it sounds like a kid on YouTube or something!

That said, it is kind of a friendly segue. Maybe I should pick it up.

2- Go Wild is a planner conference I’ve always been intrigued by, and this year their keynote is. . . . MARTHA STEWART! Wow, Go Wild! Amanda Rach Lee — an extremely popular YouTube bullet journal artist — will be there too. I am almost tempted to go (I mean, the networking would be good, I assume?!) but it’s during a fairly busy season and I am very low on days off so I think I might regret it.

3- Loved the 2024 goals ep from Girl Next Door pod! Late January is definitely not too late to set 2024 intentions. ALSO I love that they record messages for their future selves. I haven’t done that but I do relisten to my goals podcasts the next year which is similar.

4- I think we might be returning our Peloton bike! I KNOW. So many of you love it. I do like it – and it helped me SO much while I was injured — but I like running MORE and with the amount I am currently running there just isn’t room in my fitness schedule to cycle and I don’t necessarily think it’s worth paying the rental fee every month just so I can use it during a few down months.

Plus, I can always rent one again. Past history suggests that was unlikely to be my last ever injury.

5- Currently reading (and almost done with): The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake. If you liked Shark Heart (which I did!), you might love this too:

They both have that “things are not normal but we’re just going to casually assume you can go with it” vibe, and both use this mechanism to explore nearly universal challenges, like sibling relationships, marriage, family life. It’s definitely not a new release — it’s from 2011, and I learned about this book from a blog my good friend V turned me onto called Feather Factor. (Which means you can probably find it any library!)

I find myself constantly saying, “My guy,” which is what I feel like all the kids’ YouTubers call each other. “Please clear your place after dinner, my guy.” lol.

My 7 year old picked up “my man” and says it all the time to his brother and my husband. He’s tried “my woman” to me but it just doesn’t have the same feel (quite negative actually!) so I’m going to suggest “my guy” as a sort of gender neutral alternative. Thanks!

My husband “my dude”s both of our boys (including our 3 year old) and I think it’s so funny!

I’m so tempted by Go Wild, but more to see the Makselife crew (Sierra Friend is one of the presenters). It’s a no for me this year unfortunately, but maybe next year.

Sigh, ONE DAY I’ll figure out why most of my comments show up as replies…

Haha I still saw it!! Would be cool to see Sierra speak too!

Re: the Peloton, maybe a good compromise could be to buy a non-Peloton spin bike to use with the app? I have a Schwinn one that even connects to the app on my iPad to capture cadence and I got it on sale for I think $700? Not cheap but not as much as buying or renting a Peloton – for me it was mostly to have an alternative in bad weather that doesn’t take up as much space as a treadmill. An actual Peloton is definitely a better experience – I have used one at a hotel- but this setup works for me. (I mostly use the app for strength, yoga, and walking/running outdoors.)

Also, the monthly subscription for the app is less if you are not using it with a peleton bike. I used to use it with my treadmill workouts.

I also really liked lemon cake. I think we are GETTING a peleton because Ben is super sedentary at his new job and hates my elliptical trainer. I have not hear anyways, but now I will be listening intently to the undergrads LOL
