BLP Ep #180: Enjoying Media (the non-social kind)

January 8, 2024

Media Consumption

As you all know, I am currently really interested in the way we direct our attention to both internal and external stimuli. Many external stimuli are forms of MEDIA, and so this is something I am looking at very closely and thinking about a lot!

Today’s episode is all about media consumption and in it I propose several ways to really get the most out of the content we choose to immerse ourselves in, from recording to increase awareness to partnering up to taking notes.

Blog post on this topic here.

PS: Wish me luck – I’m on call this week! When I saw that I had call so early in the year I was actually excited because I felt like the ‘new year energy’ would probably propel me through managing myself well. Let’s hope this will be the case . . .

Hi Sarah, not sure if it’s just me but your page seems to have been inundated with ads and pop ups? I remember this happening some time ago, but was then resolved? Regardless, still love reading your words and listening to your podcasts! Guest suggestion, Marie Kondo. 🙂

Agreed – it’s almost impossible to view on your phone now.

Media is…tricky. I’m not on social media at all (and haven’t been in about 15 years!) but I still feel like texting, in particular, and scrolling – more generally – are my challenges.

I just finished my first 24-hour digital Sabbath and it was great! I’m hoping to do it most weekends from Saturday at 5 pm to Sunday at 5 pm. (I did watch docuseries episodes with my husband for our “date night” because that’s a beloved tradition but I didn’t check e-mail, use the interest, or touch my phone). It was surprisingly easy this weekend but I know there will be other times where it’s HARD (or impossible – especially when I’m solo parenting).

    Good luck with call!

    Sarah-
Would that be considered “anti-social media”? Hahaha

Anti-social media! Lol! I love it (and I think Arden is your dad! Very clever, Arden).

I listen to your podcast and all podcasts at 1.2x. I only struggle with that speed when listening to “The Popcast.” My husband has overheard me listening to podcasts and he said the speed that I listen to things would stress him out too much! I am a fast talker and I like to cram as many podcasts into a week as I can, so speeding them up a bit helps, plus my ap (pocket cast) will delete pauses, too.

I track my reading in a detailed manner but that’s all the media tracking I do. I do want to write down any great tv shows we watch. When I did my 2023 survey, the question about best tv shows kind of stumped me. I picked A Million Little Things but upon further reflection, it should have been season 2 of The Bear. And right now we are watching the Beckham docuseries on Netflix and it is so good. LOTS of strong language so not great around little ears unless you are fine with lots of F bombs. I didn’t know much about him but wow, it was nuts how terribly he was treated and how he was blamed for a loss during a world cup match in the late 1990s.

Alex is my dad 🙂 Arden is just an awesome commenter!! And I loved your 2023 reading recap! Lots of data.

Darn, I guessed wrong! He made a comment about a plethora of Rav 4 Primes in the PA area (I think) so I wrongly assumed it was your dad! Glad you liked my very nerdy 2023 reading recap. I loooove data!

        • Reply Arden January 10, 2024 at 7:14 pm

It was me but it was a plethora of Primes in CT not PA. Sorry you didn’t get one but I think we are hybrid twins now!

This made me giggle….Sarah, I am your FATHER. Actually I’m famous…Sarah talked about my question on one of her Oct podcasts about languishing goals and if/when to give up. She actually suggested getting a coach for my weight/exercise goals and happy to say with a bit of external accountability I’m down 22 pounds with no feelings of deprivation. 🙂

I would love a deep dive on nested goals. I know you’ve done a couple of pods about it but practical examples would be great. Like a couple of real life goals from 2023 – this is how they started annually and then how you broke it down quintile, month, weekly, daily. Thank you!

One thought for notes on books – I take pictures (or screenshots) of the pages of a book that capture my attn/interest, and then stick them in a Google note under the book title. Super easy and quick.

Also, I don’t think I’ve seen you feature someone with a KanBan board and/or sprint planning (or other Lean/Agile principles) planning/organizing. That could be fun/different. I do this at work and have gone back and forth also using this for personal stuff too.

Media is such an interesting word. I feel like there should be a better word for consuming information by others.
