Yes, We Made It!

August 6, 2024

Didn’t mean to leave everyone with a cliffhanger, but we seriously lucked out and our flight left on time — I heard a lot of others were impacted by the storm.

We had a somewhat unusual (for us) travel schedule – a direct flight that left at 6 pm Eastern and arrived at 9:30 pm Pacific! I would not have been ready to leave Saturday AM – we NEEDED that packing day. The arrival past midnight Eastern was slightly brutal but I would say overall it worked out.

PIX from mostly Day 1 (Josh has most of the Day 2 pix so I’ll do those later!)

Japanese Gardens (timed photo by A)
crazy good ice cream sandwiches at Hello Robin
holding the world’s smallest scissors at Daiso
stationery (and toy) haul – Daiso + Kinokinuya

Not shown because I forgot to take pix was dinner at Din Tai Fung – several of you recommended this place and it did not disappoint. Soup dumplings, bao, noodles, and the best cucumber salad and green beans ever (seriously, soooo good). The kids loved it too.

Yesterday Josh and I went on a run which felt amazing in cool weather, and then we headed to Bainbridge Island on the ferry. We didn’t really have plans as to what we wanted to do there and were sad to realize their big natural preserve area is closed on Mondays! AHHH! We did check out the small but really nice contemporary art museum there (game we played to engage the kids: describe this piece in one word), did a short little hike featuring the troll below, and they had a great bookstore!

THEN the ferry back got delayed and we had to drive around the sound – womp womp! But all’s well that ends well because we got to meet up with Josh’s college BFF and his kids for dinner at Chinook’s and everyone had a great time.

TONIGHT is OLIVIA NIGHT and we are headed to the Museum of Flight (Josh/Cameron request) and mayyyyybe the space needle.

I am not feeling TOTALLY relaxed but it has been a nice time overall so far, other than when the kids have been a little overtired/punchy/wild.

So funny; our family is following behind you. Flying out to Seattle, hoping the rain expected will not impact us. Noting ideas from your blog; we’re doing a lot of the same. Enjoy your trip!

I almost texted Kae to ask if you made it out alright! I am glad your flight wasn’t impacted! It sounds like you are having a great time so far, all in all. I feel like even with older kids, it can be hard to really “relax” on a vacation. Unless you are like on a beach and not doing much (which is what we tend to do since our kids are so young). Have the best time at the concert tonight. I don’t know a single song of hers! I am very out of the loop w/ what is popular besides TS. 🙂

Have so much fun – you’re in my backyard! I’m not sure of your plans, but it has been lovely lately (this is the payoff for the gray) and I’m hoping the smoke holds off this summer!

I’m so relieved you made it! That looks like an amazing trip to do with kids. Super jealous of the stationary store stop ;). Try to relax and enjoy! You deserve it!

So glad you made it! I was thinking of you and hoping that since we didn’t get an update it meant you guys made it. I love that you went to Daiso! My fav! I was just there last night and I was thinking, man if this place wasn’t near me it’s be so hard to go in and only buy a couple things. Ha! I hope Olivia is amazing tonight. I’m seeing Chappell Roan this weekend and I cannot wait.

I’m very glad you made it! I was already out of Florida by the time the weather got bad, but I guess northern Florida got slammed.
I think it’s impossible to truly relax on a vacation with kids, especially when you have three of different ages, genders, and interests and you’re trying to keep everyone happy. But, it sounds like you’re have a great time. Enjoy the concert!

Have a great time tonight! And yeah – we rarely take our car on the ferry to Bainbridge. So much to do within walking distance of the ferry terminal.

Not sure when you leave the city area, but 2 other fun adventures:
    1. Ferry to Bremerton (do nottake the car). There’s a free naval museum there that’s really nice, or you can explore the naval boat for a fee. Harborside park has these great wading pools with exploding volcanoes of water (bring bathing suits). All within steps of the ferry terminal.
    2. Kayaking! Aqua Verde is right next to the UW campus and a great place to rent kayaks (and grab tasty tacos afterwards). You can go to Lake Union from there and see houseboats and sea planes.

The Museum of Flight is so much fun! I’m not a machines person and I loved it. If you do go to the space needle then the Pacific Science Center is fun too. The glass museum is beautiful and unlike a lot of other places I’ve been, but it’s expensive and stressful with little children. The Science Center is good for kids of all ages, and the Seattle Center as a whole is fun to walk around; there’s a great playground with a climbing area that’s huge, an inverted fountain that’s a ton of fun to splash around in, the EMP (over rated if you ask me, amazing if you ask my musician husband, and some good food options on site or not far (there is one of the few Dick’s with indoor seating a block or two away).
