One of Those “Flexible” Days

October 15, 2025

Being completely transparent: some of my nonclinical “work” days do not contain a lot of time available for actual work.

(Others are jam packed with podcast/writing/course-related activities for a full workday. There are a wide variety of ways I spend my Mondays/Wednesdays!).

My kids have various things today, and in this particular case I didn’t want to outsource any of the drop-offs. C does not have school but has another commitment. A is taking the PSAT along with all of the 8th graders at her school, and there is a “speed dating”-style parent-teacher conference event which I am going to squeeze in between drop-offs and pickups (and the Starbucks top I am currently enjoying while writing this post!).

This is actually the first parent-teacher conference event I’ve ever been able to attend since A started at this school last fall, because it is usually held on a Thursday or Friday (I have patents those days).

I guess this post is just to illustrate:

YOU CANNOT DO EVERYTHING, ALL OF IT, PERFECTLY, ALL AT ONCE. SO, DON’T TRY. AND DEFINITELY DON’T BEAT YOURSELF UP FOR NOT BEING ABLE TO ACCOMPLISH THE IMPOSSIBLE.

I feel really lucky that I have one flexible job along with my much-more-rigid job. It would really really stress me out to have to fit in things like this if I were 100% clinical. I don’t know if I’ll feel the same way in ~10 years or so when the kids are much older (at that point, I’ll be close to the empty nest phase, which seems . . . way too soon?!). Careers can evolve and shift though!

And it’s certainly possible that I will wind up doing a bit of creative work this weekend (you all KNOW I’m not going to be ‘second shifting’ it, but a Saturday or Sunday session seems like it might be in the cards, and that’s ok!).

(Oh, and A is doing well status post Unger Family Fracture #5, if you’re counting both of G’s broken bones separately. She is now in a splint and doing well and very much hoping to make a full recovery before meet season begins in January. I will note that our kid fracture count was ZERO as we entered this calendar year. WILD.)

I’m having one of those flexible days as well. I spent all night restless with the beginning of sinus congestion. I’m going to call it a day – at 11:23am – I meant to do my grading but I think I’ll be harsher b/c I feel rubbish. My husband and son have been away for 5 days, and I barely saw them the week before they went, so I think I’m going to go make myself a nest in my son’s bed, and hang out with him while he does Lego and listens to his audiobook.

We’ve agreed to move (back to the city!) and I’m trying to avoid going into full insane declutter mode, but I doubt it’ll work. It will require a downsize so I’m itching to get cracking on throwing stuff away. Luckily our town’s zero waste festival is at the end of November, so I’ll have a fairly easy way of disposing of things.
