Some fascinating comments on yesterday’s post – thank you for sharing! I agree the entire concept of “retirement” is so complicated. If your work is part of what gives your life meaning, why would you want to stop doing it?!
(Short answer: because many jobs come with really frustrating aspects that can outweigh intrinsic rewards, and because humans value autonomy and many occupations really don’t allow for much).
Anyway, it was interesting to reflect on what the ‘someday’ future could possibly look like.
Zooming back to NOW, the Wednesday rebrand went pretty well yesterday. I did reach inbox zero, and it felt great! I took a lovely evening walk. We finished Little House. I also went to bed and slept more than 8 hours, which I very much needed.
AND, we took A to our new fave gelato place (Freddo – Argentina-based chain) to celebrate finishing geometry! It went well and I think she’s glad she did it. There were several rising 9th graders in the class so she will have plenty of grade-level company in alg 2 next year.
Appropriate treat considering Argentina’s win just a few hours before.
ALSO I have a fun weekend to look forward to! More on that later but you will definitely hear about it.
I KNOW IT ISN’T EVEN CLOSE TO FALL YET BUT:
So ummm . . . I just got that annual “Hey, school is soon!” email from A/C’s school. THEY GO BACK IN 3 WEEKS (G in 4.5). If this summer had gone as planned (and you all know it didn’t!) we’d be heading to Hawaii this weekend and then upon return gearing up for re-entry.
Instead, we have 3 relatively chill weeks to think about re-entry. I hope to use it well. I have admittedly struggled some years when we’ve gone too abruptly from vacation –> school, so hey, I suppose that’s just one more silver lining to moving our big trip.
I’m quite curious what the overall rhythms of the week will look like. (My guess: full). As mentioned yesterday, I am sooooo hoping for a soft landing on Fridays with nothing to do other than low key date nights and maybe piano which is very chill because the teacher comes to us!
(Side note: we plan on moving G to the same school next academic year (fourth grade), and I CANNOT wait to have just one set of logistics to manage! I mean we’ll have one kid in each level — elementary / middle / upper, but still. One calendar! One place to submit forms! I can’t wait.)
((In other late summer news: August 1st Hobonichi starts their slow march towards the 2027 lineup reveal . . .not going to lie, I am excited.))

We technically have 5.5 weeks until school, but I hear you about not being able to quite believe summer is beginning to wind down! Congrats to A on geometry! Completing a year’s worth of material in 5 weeks is nothing to sneeze at.
I just realize that I will be able to sign D up for driver’s ed soon after school starts, and registration is already open. I am… not ready.
We are off to Chicago for the weekend for a mother-daughter trip. Hopefully the wildfire smoke will have abated somewhat by then. Enjoy your chill time because I’m sure you’ll be busy again before you know it!
I enjoy my job (less so in the last several years due to politics/other unbloggable BS) but it’s not what gives my life meanings or a huge part of my identity. I feel like therapy has helped me separate my life’s work from my identity, though. Retiring early is not uncommon in my industry, though. But my work environment is intense so a good amount of people can only stay on the hamster wheel for so long…
3 weeks until school starts! Wow! My boys still have 7 more weeks of summer since we go back after Labor Day and Labor Day is SO LATE this year. I do look forward to shopping for their school supplies – but alone! I tried taking my son when he started kindergarten and he was not very thrilled about it. But school supplies are communal in our school, so you aren’t really picking out something you will keep in early elementary. I still LOVE school supply shopping since I have such great memories of going with my mom and then sitting in a circle while she divvied out the supplies to us.
All 3 kids at the same school will be AMAZING. We have that set up for 3 more years and then they won’t be at the same school until 9th and 12th grade. But our older son will likely take the bus or bike to middle school so the logistics shouldn’t be too bad hopefully. And it’s the same school district, so same closures/calendar/etc.
Yep, three weeks till school starts. Band camp starts NEXT WEEK. I have mixed feelings about this!!!

ugh I imagine they’ll be outside a whole lot – so miserable to have july/aug band camp in FL!!!!!
Hooray for A’s work in geometry. We go back on the 12th, midway through our trip to my parents’, a week with my husband and his cousins, and then a week at home before school starts. And T’s birthday just before. Poor T got savaged by bugs yesterday and is very miserable and itchy on the sofa while I work today.
Our summer holidays only just got started – super fun to see everybody’s different schedules. The first week got somewhat derailed by a badly stubbed toe, but I’ve now got alternative plans for part of the week so it’ll be OK. 2 more weeks until I have 2 weeks off holiday! Not like I’m counting down or something…
