Mic drop moment:
We were on the way to school today (Tuesday + Wednesday are my morning school driving days) and I was in a super happy mood. Halloween music was playing and I wasn’t even finding the Ghostbusters soundtrack to be particularly annoying (yet). And it occurred to me that for the past several weeks, life has just been WORKING.
The past few years have featured so many (seemingly random!) calamities and disappointments and yet since September or so, things have been largely smooth. Stable! My systems feel like they are firing on full cylinders, and I was just basking in all of that until I realized that probably at some point something is going to go terribly wrong again, because that’s just how life is.
An illness. An accident. A disappointment. An upheaval. I don’t know what it will be! But something is inevitable, and always will be until one day it won’t be because life will be over.
(Sorry, I know this got a little dark.)
But then G pipes up from the back.
“Enjoy it while it lasts, mom.” (Imagine a wizened tone, like “duh mom, obviously, but also you can still have a great time today and even feel some appreciation of that fact because why not!?”)
She has a really good point. I am going to try hard to follow her advice.
And speaking of enjoyment, we had a great book club last night! This is my friend Aimee in her awesome costume:

YESSSS this is exactly the zone I have been operating in for … I don’t know how long now, but it is starting to feel permanent. Just the last 3 weeks we’ve had everything from a child’s broken bone, to a critically ill parent, to a lizard enema. I don’t remember the last time things were ‘normal’, but as our lives do tend to mirror each other in interesting ways, I will watch for my bit of calm. “Enjoy it while it lasts” – love it!
