halfway point

September 15, 2008

i’m at the halfway point of my ward senior month already. seriously, time flies when you are not in the PICU! while i am definitely feeling the sleep debt built up from 6 weeks of call, i am still having a good time. so far, i have found the biggest challenge (other than staying awake post-call) to be balancing time for the patients vs. time for teaching students and sub-interns. my brand new students absolutely need teaching and guidance, but since it is early in the year, the interns still need lots of help and supervision. i am lucky to have a FANTASTIC intern, but there are still ins and outs of the system she needs help with (as would anyone new to our crazy institution). while i’ve been told that the senior’s role is more ‘big picture’, i haven’t been able to let go of the details yet — follow up appointments, daily lab values, etc. maybe i’m just too much of a control freak? however, i have gotten better at delegating making said appointments and ordering said labs to the rest of my team.

i have to admit though that being at work alone yesterday and getting to do all the minutia and think about the patients without 4 others surrounding me like baby birds hungry for knowledge was great. i actually was happy to be writing all the notes, checking up on all the details, and basically being intern-for-a-day. it helped me realize that even though i am not doing those things, i haven’t missed anything big going on with the kids on my team.

in other news, i had a lovely sunday yesterday. i did make it out of work by noon (even with all of those notes to write!) and pretty much conquered my to-do list. my only failure was making it to bed by 9 (of course) but i did make it by 9:30 — close enough, i suppose. especially since one of the reasons for ending a little later was the insertion of an hour long nap from 2 – 3 pm. i did get my online shopping done

as a result, i have about 8 jillion packages en route to our mailbox right now! these include:
• refills for our smart spin container system (yes, AS SEEN ON TV — whatever, i love it)
• my paul mitchell conditioner from drugstore.com (and it better come soon, i’m getting desperate)
• presents for brand new baby and brand new one year old (HAPPY BIRTHDAY MAX!) from gap.com
• part of a present for my sister AND xmas gifts for my fabulous college friends from an undisclosed vendor (i know at least some of them read this)

yay!

workout: 9 miles on the faster side (8:34/mi, 0.5% incline), while listening to the dirty dancing soundtrack (ha!). i would have loved to do these outside, but by the time i finished work, it was over 90 degrees outside! the last 2 felt pretty hard, i have to admit. followed by 20 minutes of stretching yoga. this combo really seems to help my lame hip and tight achilles tendons.

reading: 30 minutes on bleeding disorders. for no reason, just because the article was there.

cooking: some amy’s pizza (pesto with whole wheat crust) and spinach salad with gorgonzola, dried cherries, and walnuts with woodstock dressing on top. devoured post-run with josh. SO convenient.
