getting close! last-day preparations
aaahhhh! i’m incredibly excited for our trip. i know that josh is on pins and needles as well because he called between gory traumas to discuss wineries. i can just imagine: tough surgeons in the OR eloquently deliberating the merits of cakebread chardonnay until a geyser of blood suddenly spurts out of some poor guy’s aorta (what? it happens all the time on grey’s).

today is packing/preparing day #2 — now that the house is clean and the laundry is done, i can focus on finishing up with last minute plans, buying gifts and other necessities, and the actual packing process. i HATE packing! one might think that as a list guru i relish the opportunity to put my organizational skillz to work, but . . . no. packing things up for a trip always makes me nervous (that i’ll forget something, that it all won’t fit, or that everything will get messed up, lost, and/or confiscated because i didn’t pack my liquids correctly). it also always makes me feel like my wardrobe is seriously lacking, whether this is actually the case or not. i never know how much to take.

i think that this time i am going to be a huge nerd and actually write out a plan for what i might wear each day so that i don’t over or underpack. i used to do this when i was like 10 years old, and it actually worked pretty well. unlike back then, though, i am going to steer clear of hypercolor shirts, neon bike shorts, and multicolored scrunch socks. oh 1990, how i miss you so.

anyway. rather than looking like an extra on kids incorporated (by the way, did you know fergie, as in “fergilicious” was on that show?), i would like to dress well on this trip. i am happy to have the chance to actually wear the summery dresses and skirts that normally sit in my closet looking forlorn, as well as the white pants that i can never bust out at work because then i’d be in head to toe white with my coat and that would just be silly. the weather looks like it will be very pretty (see below), but i know it may not be as warm at night as it is here, so i will adjust accordingly.

in addition to styling my trip, i also still need to hit borders for some in-flight entertainment reading as well as a travel guide (even though SO much is on-line these days, i was just thinking it would be good to have something with us at all times that is on paper). we’re set for at least part of the flight there, though — to get us even more pumped for wine-tasting, i downloaded sideways to my mac to watch on the plane as a ‘rental’ — apparently this works fine as long as you start the movie at home when still connected to the internet.

we will try to follow miles’ advice, too: “No, if anyone orders Merlot, I’m leaving. I am NOT drinking any fucking Merlot!”

microclimates?

we will be spending time in sonoma, napa, san francisco, davis, and the silicon valley area. the overall scale of things isn’t huge — for perspective, napa and davis are about 50 miles apart according to google maps. however, i was surprised to see such different forecasts showing up on accuweather! it’s not like i expect these sorts of temperature difference when driving 1 or 2 hours north or south of NC. check it out:

i am happy to see that a bright cloudless sun is the common theme. i guess that must be what the grapes like, and i concur.

blog plans?
i spent a while yesterday looking back at the little moleskin notebook i wrote in while we were on our honeymoon trip to hawaii, and also the posts i put up from last year’s big trip to asheville. whether it’s on paper or on-line, i LOVE chronicling vacation fun, and it is so nice to look back on when times are tougher. so yes, i will be blogging our adventures — i even cleaned out the camera in preparation for faster uploading! get ready for a luxe week of wine, food, and friends. i can’t wait!

flossing/nails: i cut my nails so they’re short again, but at least i didn’t bite them. and flossing = yes.

Have a great trip! I like to plan out on a day by day basis too, otherwise I end up with odds and ends that dont match at all.

Sideways gave merlots a bum rap. Some merlots are delicious, so if you encounter any touted ones, enjoy!
