surprise!
thanks to some very nice coworkers who let me leave a little early, i jetted out of same day/swine flu clinic at 4:30 pm and caught a flight to philadelphia, cabbed it to the suburban street where i grew up, and surprised the $*#&(#&@ out of my mom! she is alllllways asking josh and me “when are you going to come visit?” and a few weeks ago i decided to make use of one of the last free weekends that i have and show up unannounced for mother’s day weekend.

after the nice haitian taxi driver told me alllll about his 4 children and his wicked no-good brother (aside: i understood about 50% of what he said since he was talking very quickly with a thick accent and i was in the back of the cab, but i don’t think he cared), i was dropped off next door (to be extra sneaky). i prepped our mini-video camera and got out my phone. i didn’t want to just bust in because my dad is on business until tonight and while i wanted to surprise, i didn’t want my sudden appearance to be scary. my ruse was to call saying that i had tracked a UPS package and it was sitting out on her doorstep.

it worked like a charm! she came out and was totally floored that i was the package. and i captured it in HD. so here i am in philadelphia. we are scheming how to best make use of the day. my sister is actually here too (for a wedding!) so it’s a perfect opportunity for some girl-centric fun.

ideas
✿ walking/hiking on some nearby trails
✿ shopping! (my pick)
✿ movie?
✿ bookstore
✿ museum?
✿ somewhere fun for lunch

in my fantasy world we would go to a spa and get mani/pedis and facials but that is just NOT how my mom rolls. she makes kickin’ baked goods though so i will forgive her.

off to run — i always think i will run into everyone i went to school with, but it never happens.

time-sensitive
thanks for your tips and comments on yesterday’s post! i will say that i probably will not change my early morning routine. i really savor that time (even though it’s so early!) and it generally puts me in a great mood to start each day. i don’t spend time watching TV (2 hours/week is it — if that) so my AM chill time is my fluffy indulgent alternative.

it’s true though that prepping lunch ahead of time would be a great time-saver and may help me from having to rush so much, so i will try that! and, let’s face it — i definitely could stand to put in some reading time after work. i don’t typically nap afterwards (that was just a spontaneous crash) but i do tend to waste time then and there is no reason i couldn’t throw in 15-30 minutes of something before i start prepping dinner. so i’ll work on it! although my schedule changes SO much from month to month, so this routine is only going to stand for the next week anyway.
