now just FIVE shopping days left!

May 15, 2009

until the big 2-9! but don’t worry, i’m sure tiffany will rush it if you pay extra.

(i’m kidding, people. all i need for my birthday is love.)
(and orla kiely.)
(kidding again.)
(i think.)

blast from the past
lying on the couch last night a little too tired to do anything productive, i spent some time perusing my old blog archives from 2006 and 2007. thinking about going back to the lab for my fellowship had me trying to remember what it was like to be doing science all day in the first place, and it was really cool to have a written record of how i actually felt about it at the time. apparently, i had my good days but more bad days, and knew how to do things like “protein assay of membrane-prep lysates.” cool.

i had forgotten how agonizing it was to go through the quarterlife career crises i had back then, going from happily attending a scientific conference to quitting the md/phd program in just one month’s span. dude! i DID sound a little crazy back then. but i’m really glad it worked out the way it did, and am very happy with my decision. i definitely still feel more drawn to the clinical side, but someday i do think it would be great to get involved in some more translational projects, and i think that going back to the bench for a couple of years during fellowship will be very good for me in terms of learning how to think like a scientist again.

back to now
anyway. just some early friday morning career musings! time to focus back on TODAY, which is filled with kidneys and consults and consults in the NICU. we are managing the fluids/electrolytes for a patient who has SIADH/trileptal-induced hyponatremia and a sodium of 105. *(&#($*&! if you have any medical background whatsoever, you will be impressed by that.

today (well, tonight) also contains something fun: a wedding! one of the pediatrics residents that i am friends with is getting married. i’m excited to get all dressed up and sip champagne, but i can’t go too crazy because i am on backup call (“jeopardy”) all weekend. CROSS your fingers for me that my pager stays silent, because if i get called in for 30 hours of call i will be very, very displeased.

workout: none. i think that atilla was right in that going back to 4 miles on wednesday was a little premature. but this morning i really am feeling a lot better, so we’ll see where the run takes me!

doin’ time: i really have not been eating — never mind actually cooking proper dinners this week, but i will post a close-up of the granola i discussed in yesterday’s post.
perfect afternoon snack of plain yogurt, zoe’s honey-almond granola, and strawberries.

reading: NO. eek.

flossing: another NO! i know, i suck. but at least i’m still thinking about it.

* * * * * * * * * *

addendum: i guess it’s goodbye to renal — already pulled to same day clinic for the day. arughgh! at least i’m probably not going to catch anything new. and i’m glad to say i got my run in first!

I remember how shocked I was when you posted about leaving the MD/PhD program! I was always the one who was writing about hating lab and wanting to quit and how lab was ruining my relationship with SS, and you were the voice of encouragement, but clearly it *was* the best decision for you to make :). And it sounds like you’re looking forward to getting back into lab for a few years, whereas the thought of that is hideously repulsive to me! 🙂
