VALENTINE’S DAY, 2020: Probably our least romantic one yet. Josh was operating from 11:30 pm 2/13 – 6:00 am 2/14, so . . . yeah! I ended up doing our annual ‘treasure hunt’ with the kids anyway, and it was a hit despite my being alone.
Then I took them to school, did lots of work (including a full weekly review/ Inbox ZERO situation, my fave). And we all went to bed at 8:30 PM. Like, the entire household.
A far cry from the days we’d make French toast & drink champagne. Oh well. I’m sure one of these days we will have a nice V-day. I don’t actually mind though, especially since we will be getting some nice couples time together on some other trips this year.
Romance can happen on days other than 2/14 🙂
ANYWAY. So we had a lovely weekend (really, it was great!) and I didn’t mean to disappear but . . . life happens! Josh and I were both off. He was behind on charts (very) and needed to spend a chunk of time each day doing those, but there was a good amount of family time in there too. While he was working, I took the kids to Young at Art (Sat) and Flamingo Gardens (Sun). Both are close to our house and (obviously) we get our money’s worth out of our yearly memberships!
I got to work out both days, read both days, take a mini-nap Sunday and we had a date night. AND a playdate/dinner on Sunday!
All ingredients for a happy successful weekend in my book.
A few pix . . .
The book was Carol Dweck’s Mindset, which was interesting (I read it last week in preparation). And now I want a beer sampler glass set.
Weekly Rundown:
Workouts:
M – Morning run w/ strides, 3.16 mi 10:05/mi average
T – rest. Was just tired from coming off call week & needed to sleep!
W – 4.7 mi with 3 @ tempo (9:11, 9:42, 9:20 – ugh!). It was hot (79F) but I was a little disappointed in these splits.
R – Beachbody Upper Fix, 8 + 12 lb weights
F – rest. Was going to run, but (see above) Josh wasn’t actually home in the morning so it was not going to happen!
S – 5.6 mi total, 6 x 1K pace. I was VERY happy with this run in contrast to Weds! Splits were 8:20, 8:41, 8:46, 8:46, 8:38, 8:48. (Goal was ~9:00).
S – Beachbody Dirty 30, 8 + 12 lb weights. (By the way, this is the most efficient use of 28 minutes for strength work that I can think of! And for some reason I don’t hate it that much.)
Meals this week:
M – Turkey burgers + salad
T – Chicken Tikka Masala w/ rice & cauliflower from Dinner Illustrated
W – leftovers
R – whatever Cameron wants (TBD) for his bday!
F – green chile & corn quesadillas + salad w/ avocado from Dinner Illustrated

It can be tough, sometimes, to compare pre-kids life to post-kids life. So huge kudo’s for keeping it all in perspective and realizing that, yes, love can be celebrated any day – though the arbitrary 2/14 does seem to be a fun reminder.
We actually managed to have a romantic home-cooked Valentines meal together this year, but several years in a row my hubby was travelling over Valentine’s Day (he also frequently seems to miss Mother’s Day and my birthday due to work travel – I’ll admit, it bums me out more than it likely should)!
I care much more about those dates than about V day 🙂 and I make sure josh is off for them … so I get it!!
Have you talked more about your parenting book group here or on the podcast? I’ve been looking but may have missed it. I think its a wonderful idea and am curious about trying to start one!
Oof, that is a long night of surgery for your husband! Valentine’s Day has always been super low key in our house, even before kids. My husband is a questioners so he doesn’t really believe in holidays like Valentine’s Day. He thinks it’s a hallmark holiday. He kind of has a point, I guess! I worked in a restaurant in college and Vday was an awful day to work (people would get pissed about waiting for a table, having to order off a set menu, etc etc) so I prefer to stay in. I made lentil enchiladas and Spanish rice as that’s my husband’s favorite meal. The toddler wouldn’t eat any of it, go figure! His loss I guess!
That peacock is so cool!! I can’t believe how close Cameron was able to get to it! We are heading to FL tomorrow and I can’t wait to be outside and not wear a ton of layers. Getting our son into his jacket, hat, boots and snow pants is such a hassle and practically a full-body workout!!
YES quite the long night! and i absolutely get staying in on V-day! Even when we had more time/freedom on the holiday, we rarely went out.
We did nothing for V-day, and (maybe for the first time) I didn’t mind at all. Maybe I can drag the kid and the husband to get sushi this weekend. That would be super fun. 🙂
sushi = Annabel’s favorite! I should go with just her sometime b/c it is quite uncivilized with all 5 of us. thankfully they all like it though!
