COVID19 Goals Planners

Day 47: It’s May!

May 1, 2020

If you are a newsletter subscriber, you hopefully received my first edition with that title this morning! I am happy to finally be able to check “launch newsletter” off of my goals list — it has been languishing there forever.

It’s a new month, and one of my favorite ones at that. Though sometimes my excitement about all the fabulous things May contains ends up backfiring. Expectations too high, or something like that?

There’s Mother’s Day, my birthday, and our anniversary. And this year is a particularly big birthday.

YES I WILL BE 40 THIS MONTH.

I’m coming to terms with it. I think.

Actually, I feel pretty okay about 40. I do feel that with every passing year, I become less concerned with what I am ‘supposed’ to do (per society?) and more aware that this life is my ONE chance, so I might as well jump in.

Normally, the top of the new month would be a place to review April goals. But I didn’t really set any! I did use my habit tracker religiously.

Final Numbers:

APRIL

Meditation: 29/30 days (I accidentally broke my streak by just completely forgetting to do my Headspace. #($*&@)

Blog Post: 30/30. As you are all aware!

Workout: I took 2 days off after completing the 5-workout series “A Little Obsessed”, so 28/30.

Outside: I managed to get outside for at least 30 minutes (usually taking a walk) 28/30 days.

Skincare: 30/30! Even though my routine has become quite minimal since I am out of all of my favorite products. (COME ON Sephora package. Totally understand why you might be delayed, but I am greatly looking forward to your arrival!)

Read: 29/20 days. And yet somehow I only finished 2 books (Ben Lerner The Topeka School and Laura Vanderkam The Cortlandt Boys)! I am almost done with 2 others though (Beth O’Leary’s The Flatshare and Mason Currey’s Daily Rituals) so perhaps we can round up to 3.

MY HOBONICHI COMES TODAY!!!

Yes I meant for those letters to be large. I am so excited to set it up and be back in my personal planner gold standard. It was a fun romp trying out the FFP (and I can see how it’s a great system for some!) but man – I missed the Hobonichi Techo Cousin!

Today:

  • BB Workout (3 more days left in 21DFX!)
  • Weekly review
  • GME meetings & catchup (finish creating 2nd yr schedule. Cannot WAIT until I have a chief resident to do this next year!!!!)
  • Create May Monthly Goals
  • Set up Hobonichi (assuming it doesn’t arrive too late)

I turned 40 last year, and it was a really fun birthday. With the milestone, it’s like you’re allowed to celebrate yourself and tell everyone your age and just be kid-like in your excitement. No one boasts “I’m turning 39,” yet there’s something fun about announcing 40. (You’ll have the extra memories of virtual and/or masked celebrations of a COVID birthday.)

Turning 40 was the first birthday I was really non-plussed about age-wise, but the actual day was fine I was unconscious for most of it as I had been on cardiac call the day before. During that 26 hour call I did the anesthesia for 2 on-pump cardiac cases (I don’t remember them, so they must not have been notable) followed by the repair of a mitral valve that had somehow become avulsed from the endocardium where the patient was in florid heart failure and almost exsanguinated (but I think did ok in the end), followed by an aortic root/hemi-arch repair in a patient with endocarditis and mixed shock that ran until 7AM the next day. It ended up being a really fun case. It was actually one of my better nights on cardiac call, even though I was up all night. The fellow let me take a long break at around 4AM and I wandered around the ICU chatting with people for about an hour before heading back to the OR to finish the case. I slept the rest of the day.

Has anyone else reached out to say that they didn’t receive the newsletter despite signing up? I checked junk mail, email preferences on the sign-up, boy don’t seem to have received the newsletter. Not a huge deal but just wanted to let you know that I signed up the first day you announced it but didn’t receive it yesterday for some reason. Have a good weekend!

Oh very interesting! A bunch replied so I know it went out to most! I will check the mail chimp app and investigate – thank you!!

Hi! I just checked mail chimp and it appears to have sent out to everyone on the list! I’m not entirely sure if you signed up AFTER I published May whether you still get it. There is supposed to be a ‘landing’ page with pdf you first get when you sign up – I’m going to double check that this is working!!

Just to let you know – I just signed up but didn’t land on a PDF… not sure if it’s still set up for that?

You should receive a welcome email that contains a link to a pdf! Did that happen?
