Something I never thought I was “allowed” to do:
Go outside while at work.
30-40 minutes with a podcast or music = so therapeutic, even in the FL sunshine — or yesterday, threatening rain. Yesterday’s pick was Norah Jones, which was relaxing and nice. I previously wrote that the neighborhoods around the hospital weren’t great for walking but honestly, the area is growing on me. I’ve been doing this intermittently for a few weeks and nothing remotely terrible has happened yet.
I have somehow become involved in about 34873 different meetings which means that I often have to work right through lunch. Which means sitting for many hours straight with no break. BUT if I really really bang out my notes and stay focused I can usually carve out 30-40 minutes somewhere.
(And I do not feel guilty about it, especially having spent my “lunch break” at a meeting!)
SO, that is my new hobby. My father used to take daily walks around the Biology Pond at Penn. For like, decades.
I guess maybe I am slowly turning into my parents. (In some ways, anyway).

Agreed! I have been walking laps in our office parking lot while talking to my dad on the phone, as many days a week as I can escape notes/calls/meetings, and it is one of the highlights of my day.
Penn State?
UPenn (West Philadelphia – he went there for undergrad and law school and then worked at an office right near there for decades)
When I was working in the office, I really made an effort to get out for a quick lunchtime walk. I’m in Scotland so weather doesn’t always cooperate but I always feel better after it. And if I really need the boost, I stop for a hot chocolate en route back.
Great!
There was a semester I took “duck breaks” by the river on campus when I had only 30 minutes between classes in two different buildings. It was just enough time to sit down, feed some ducks, and reorient for the next class.
I’ve done the walk at lunchtime for years. You’ll soon learn that you’re not the only one! At my previous office, the building was on a circular street in a suburban industrial park, and there were a handful of us who walked during the day. It’s so refreshing. Even in the FL heat.
This is awesome! I love that.
i find a walk with fresh air and podcast is the perfect midday or anytime pickup! 🙂
I walk around the Biopond on my lunch breaks!! (Well, used to…)
I just wanted to say I LOVE this photo. My new bedroom has a lot of that gray, reclaimed wood look to it and I wish very much I could frame this photo down there. It’s awesome.
