Best Laid Plans Goals

2021 Goals Countdown: Work (and a Giveaway!)

December 29, 2020

PROFESSIONAL GOALS

I recognize these might not be very exciting to read, but for completeness of the series, I must include them!

Projects:

I have two academic projects of focus for 2021.

a) research involving a coaching program for the residents. I am doing this with a colleague who has experience doing something similar in another sphere. This is one reason why I am completing a coaching certification (through Wellcoaches).

b) research involving type 2 diabetes diagnosis rise during the pandemic

I think it is more likely that b) can be completed during 2021, but I want to give some focus to both. I would like to pull together b) and submit for publication in some sphere within the calendar year. I plan on doing this in tandem with 1+ interested residents, so hopefully that will help drive things along!

Wellness:

I don’t know if I’ve mentioned it, but I acquired a role in early 2020 leading the physician wellness committee at our institution. (There is currently no time or $ allocated for this role, so it’s not something I can do a TON with, but I definitely want to do something!).

Anyway, 2020 was . . . not a great time to acquire anything, so my goals in 2021 are to expand the offerings and initiatives of this committee, as well as get a better sense of what people want (within realistic limits).

Teaching

I want to continue to up my game in terms of teaching and engaging residents. I think I do pretty well but could be better. Years of feeling time pressure (having to feel like I was on a rush to get home at a very specific time) have sometimes made me to rush through the days more than I really need to at this juncture. If I get home 30 minutes late 2 days/week . . . literally nothing bad would happen, and I could be more patient and get a lot more teaching in. I want this to be something I really focus on in 2021.

I also want to help med students and residents teach themselves! Some of them come in really looking for structure. I have a slew of pdf articles to hand out, but no reason (other than time constraints) I couldn’t design a more structured course of study for the endo rotation.

I also want to help medical students / residents work on writing better (ie: more organized! more relevant/targeted! less overly wordy!) notes. I’d love to design some sort of tutorial related to this. (But now I’m getting a little tangential!)

Meetings

I want to attend at least one academic meeting (endo vs GME?) in 2021, though virtual is acceptable in this category as long as I appropriately block off time and treat the time as a learning retreat.

Time Block Plan Most of my Unstructured Days

Yes! This is how I really hope to get all of the above (you know, plus the rest of my job . . .) done. I think this method really is the most efficient/best one for my GME days. I’d like to have full on time blocking be a habit first thing on those days before I really start with anything else.

GIVEAWAY

Well, if you made it this far . . . you win! Well, maybe you win. I have two items to give away! My apologies that it’s so close to the end of the year, especially since I cannot go to the post office until my quarantine is over (probably 1/7).

But, I know some of you would be excited to receive these items anyway, even if it’s just to play with or supplement your planner systems. I am not going to require anything of you for this giveaway, though if it inspires you to follow me or sign up for my newsletter (form conveniently located below), so be it!

You could also leave a BLP review! But you don’t have to do any of those things. Just felt like it would be reasonable to mention them. ANYWAY.

The two items are:

SPACES PLANNER note, there is one sample week filled out at the end of the year + a pen test

from my recent review

HOBONICHI WEEKS SET! – this was gifted to me by a very generous donor (and also one of my BFFS) who was suffering from a bit of planner indecision. This is a full Hobonichi weeks + accessories. I believe there is a bit of a pen test in there somewhere but the book is largely blank.

Hobonichi weeks + accessories!

If you’d like to enter, please leave in your comment which item you would be interested in. I will do a random number drawing and the first “SPACES” or “WEEKS” I get (ie, I’ll keep drawing until I have one of each!) will win the items!

RULES:

Please note this is not in any way sponsored by these companies. I am just giving these away with no requirements on your end.

This must be US or Canada only (I’m sorry!) due to postage constraints.

Please do not put “BOTH” in your comment – you will be disqualified. I understand loving all products, but want the winners to have passion for one or the other!

PS: If your comment does not show up right away, please do not leave a duplicate -it probably went to automatic moderation, but I will manually let all of these through before choosing the winner!!!

GOOD LUCK! I will pick the winner by ~6am tomorrow (whenever I go to post!)

Hi Sarah, I would love to win the SPACES planner.

Your goal setting is inspiring me to spend time this week setting goals for 2021. Professional goals are tough since my role at the library is currently hemmed in due to COVID restrictions. However, I really need to brainstorm some ideas and yours gave me one glimmer to chase down. Thanks!

Hi Sarah! I hope you are all still feeling well! I’d love to try out the Spaces planner. I’ve converted to mostly digital planning tools (mainly to sync with my husband), but I’m a paper-planner girl at heart, so I’d love to see how to work with the two together. I love BLP and am enjoying hearing more about the different options. I feel a unique kinship with your blog since I grew up in South Florida and recognize some of the challenges of the never-ending summer weather 🙂 I’ve really appreciated your perspective during the pandemic because most of my family is still living in the area and I’m located in Northern VA (which is often experiencing something totally different!) Thanks for all your writing!

WEEKS! Been thinking of you guys, hope you’re hanging in there. I’m wrapping up my 2021 goals. Going to try quintiles, 1 personal day per quintile. I’m trying dot journaling (bought Rachel Miller’s book) thanks to BLP. Hope you know what a rat of sunshine both your pods are to many people during the pandemic especially.

Thank you for sharing your professional goals, too! I have been noodling over my own the last week or so, and while at work I’ve very specific financial targets to reach in 2021, other, more non-urgent-but-important goals are also things I’d like to reach, including signing up for regular executive coaching and leveling up my leadership skills. I’m off this week so now would be a great time to really organize a plan for those goals, and your post just inspired me to do that!

I’m not thrilled with the weekly I purchased in a rush, so I would love to try it for 2021! I’m a nursing professor, picking up ICU shifts and a mom of 3 girls (soon to be 4 in June). Sarah! I was reading about planners last night and you were quoted in an article about one of the planners you recently reviewed. I was reading about them because I realized I need one. I just started a part-time legal job and need a paper planner. Super late to the game, so the Cousin is sold out. My husband has the smaller hobonichi, but I think I’d prefer bigger pages.

Not an entry, but what a kind gesture! Thanks to your recommendations, I have the Wonderland 222 (in the smaller B6…LOVE!!), and I’m also doing the Organize 365 program (with planner) as well as Powersheets. Apparently 2021 seemed like a good year to experiment! I’ve started all 3, and Powersheets provides a great overview of my goals, Organize 365 is daily but specific to home/life organization, and the Wonderland222 is what I keep with me.

Your professional goals are as interesting to read about as your personal, family, financial, and fitness goals. This one is really making me think about how I want to do my professional goals this year. Normally in my planner I just put “complete 20XX work goals” and then maayyyybe one other thing. I’d be nice to incorporate some continuing education in there for me as well like you are doing.

I’m super interested in the SPACES planner.

Oooh so fun – a contest – i want to enter but I am tickled with the Plum Paper planner i ordered a couple of months ago and am so happy to start it this week!!

Thanks for sharing your goals – really interesting items for you that seem to be about advancing your practice. I do struggle sometimes with work related ones even though i am in a place where i could start really thinking about advancing my skills more strategically or looking at leadership opportunities. I don’t know, 2021 feels so unsettled still.

Darn I missed the giveaway! So kind of you to give these away. I would have been interested in the spaces planner! I’m excited to get that W222 in 2022. Would never have found out about that planner if not for you.

I need to think about my professional goals at work when I am back from Mat leave or towards the end of my leave. I took on a big project last year and the balance of work was pretty uneven and resulted in me feeling frustrated so I am hoping that things will be more balanced when I come back as my coworkers have been forced to figure things out in my absence! I was feeling really burned out before my leave started so hopefully this break will result in me feeling less frustrated when I go back to work!
