I am still alive!
It was a rough week, thanks to my robust immune reaction to the COVID booster (perhaps added to by the flu shot I received in the other arm).
In retrospect, since I have essentially had 3 doses of COVID antigen (one ‘dose’ of actual virus, two via Pfizer!), I’m not entirely sure #3 was warranted — I didn’t see the articles like this one until after! But now I’ve already gotten it, so that’s basically as relevant as the Zillow estimates on our old house (lol).
Anyway, it may be related to prior exposures or it may be genetic (my sister never had COVID but also felt quite sick after her 2nd dose) but I was once again laid up with fevers to 102 and basically the inability to do anything for anyone. I had to cancel my clinic day (moved the patients).
I had the shots (are Americans allowed to say “jabs”? I kind of like it . . .) on Tuesday, and was fine until the evening. At 48 hours I was much better, and it’s now 72 hours later and I feel normal. Whew! Josh and I had planned this mini-break to Vero beach and other than being a little woozy while packing, we are both up to enjoying the li’l mini-break.
(2 nights. Like ~45 hours. No kids!)
Our nanny is watching the kids although A is sleeping over a friend’s house tonight at her request.
Today’s Plan
finish this post + my coffee
go for a (short, not hard) run with Josh
do some planning together. Seriously though, I’m excited about it (I helped him do this last in January 2020. You can imagine how useful that ended up being . . .). Item Priority #1 will be choosing our next mini-break. We used to do weekly date nights (on non-call weekends, so ~60% of the time) but are moving towards monthly date nights and quarterly (ideally) mini-breaks. More restorative and this way we have plenty of weekends that are fully with the whole family.
watch many more episodes of Enlightened (a show from 2011 produced by Mike White and starring Laura Dern). It is CRAZY how much has changed since 2011. She was texting on her blackberry but phones and social media played almost no role in anyone’s lives. Will 2031 be that different from today!?
read, maybe hang out by pool or walk on beach
nice dinner etc
Yeah, I recognize that’s not much of a plan but it is about right for this getaway.
Anyway – just wanted to check in, did not mean to ghost the blog this week . . .

What a beautiful view! So glad you’re getting away for a bit it is so restorative. What a good word. A couple of weekends ago my mom took our kids and it was our first time away from both of them in three years!! We stayed home and despite all the plans we had in mind we were so tired but it was amazing to just take a nap when we needed it!
Getting my 3rd “jab” in 2 hours. I felt terrible after the second one and have never had Covid. I am very nervous because despite planning for a Friday my weekend looks to be very full…we shall see.
Lovely view. Sorry to hear you felt so ill after your booster. To be honest, I get the feeling that “jab” usage in the US has a very anti-Covid vax attitude. I’m not sure it translates here in the US from the British usage.
Oh interesting! To me it just reads so British, and I actually never knew they used that term anywhere until COVID
I think it’s coming from Fox News. I am originally from a very red state somewhere in the middle of the country and most of them refer to it as the “jab.” I have some British friends who refer to most vaccines as jabs, so I’ve heard both.
Oh, Enlightened is possibly my favorite show of all time! I identify with Amy on so many levels (which I realize is not always the best thing 🙂 and I miss those characters. I sometimes wonder what Amy is doing now? And Mike White is a genius.
I was lucky and just had a headache after getting the booster. Hope you are feeling better and enjoy the mini break!
A friend of mine had a very similar reaction to her 3rd shot! I got mine in August since I’m immune-compromised and once again had ZERO side effects! I’ve been lucky or maybe my body isn’t really reacting to it thanks to my immune suppressant drugs? Who knows. I had a convo about it with my rheumatologist and she said there just isn’t a good way to measure how well my body is reacting so we just have to hope it’s working and continue to be more careful than the average person.
I hope you had a great getaway! I’m glad you were feeling well enough to enjoy it! It’s nice to hear about your goal of monthly dates and quarterly breaks. I hear several people reference weekly date night and that just seems like A LOT!! But we actually did not go on weekly dates pre-kids. We are kind of home bodies I guess? I’d like to get back to doing quarterly dates, but maybe as day dates although that gets challenging during the winter as we aren’t winter sports people and it’s tough to come up with fun date ideas during our cold winter months? Something for me to ponder, though… I’m hopeful we can go on our first getaway in the spring! Fingers crossed that works out. My parents will watch our kids and by then the youngest will be around 16-18 months so at an easier stage? Sort of? At least in terms of night time sleep.
