Vancouver Days 1-2!

August 1, 2023

I just have a few minutes while Josh is running — here are some pix!

So far we:

TRAVEL DAY:

Had an uneventful (whew) 6.5 hour flight from MIA — YVR followed by a one-night stay at the very convenient Fairmont Vancouver Airport

DAY 1:

Met up and had breakfast + playground time with Josh’s aunt / cousins who happened to be visiting from Portland AND Miami (his aunt was on our flight randomly!!!)

Dim sum @ Kirin

Walked around Stanley Park with our friends

DAY 2:

Josh and I each went running around Stanley Park (not at the same time)

extremely scenic run

Whale watching !!! This was so cool. We saw orcas AND humpbacks and apparently got lucky with better-than-average sightings (or maybe they tell everyone that!). But it was awesome. We were on the water for ~4+ hours and the kids did quite well. The free hot chocolate helped . .

We followed that with lunch/dinner at Granville Market and a trip to the Kids Market.

(Annabel and I managed to make our usual Japanese stationery store stop @ Paper-Ya!)

THEN we attempted to go see Barbie but it was sold out (and everyone was dressed up in pink!). Oops. Josh and Cameron saw Mission Impossible and the girls and I hung out at the hotel and watched TV.

Kids Market find!
I SAW THIS HAPPEN!

The weather has been unbelievably gorgeous. High 50s AM / 70s during day. The time change has worked in our favor (I don’t want to think about going back but we’ve got a ways to go!).

More to come!

If you get a chance you should go see sun yat sen’s traditional Chinese garden. It was fun and even dylan enjoyed it when she was 7! Plus there’s a playground nearby.

My 5yo and I just read a non-fiction kids book about Orcas – we finished it last night!! I have to show him the picture in this post. You should check the book out when you are back. It’s called ‘Orcas’ by Dionne Mann. It was so fascinating! It talks about their pods, how they find a mate, how babies are born and fed, how fast they grow, how they hunt. Your kids might really appreciate it after seeing them in real life!

It sounds like your trip is off to a great start! Vancouver is such an amazing city. I loved Stanley Park! I ran there and also rented a bike so I could see a bit more.

I was very restrained but I got a colored notebook by Midori + a tiny passport sized travelers notebook insert b/c I wanted to try the paper! Annabel got hedgehog washi tape and a shimmery blue/purple pen.

Looks so fun! Glad you’re having perfect weather. I’ve never done a whale watching tour but think that would be super cool! Only thing- where are the remaining 50 pictures in your post?! 😉 haha… oh wait, that must just be me who includes absurd numbers of photos in travel posts…..hahahaha! 😜 Keep enjoying!!

I’m a blog reader who lives in Vancouver – love seeing my city experienced through new eyes! You guys are visiting at the perfect time, weather-wise. Hope you have a lovely rest of your trip. I would recommend running along Jericho Beach to Spanish Banks if you have the time, and/or checking out Pacific Spirit Park’s trails!
