Weekend Overview
We (me + all 3 kids) saw Mean Girls (2024 musical version). It was fun to see Tina Fey reprise her role, and some elements of the original DID need updating. At the same time, for me it didn’t quite have the original’s charm. I’m still glad I saw it.
(Just learned that the girl who played 2024 Janis is Auliโi Cravalho, the voice of Moana! I did think she sounded familiar, and also fantastic).
Josh worked a ton on call. He still took G to soccer and help coach her team, which was super cute. She hustled more than I’ve seen her do in the past — I was proud of her!
AND, I took the kids shopping at our local outlet mall. A was running out of items that fit (esp since school has rules about length of shorts etc). She REALLY wanted Lululemon shorts and we found a pair for her on sale at the outlet and then all 3 kids got a few things at the Nike outlet.
Morning
Monday morning was a huge improvement over Friday! I got back from my run earlier which definitely helped (I started at 5:35 –> home at 6:47) and then Josh and I divided and conquered with more clearly delineated roles: I made lunches + brought stuff (lunches / backpacks / water bottles) to the front door, he helped G finish getting ready including the whole sock/shoe situation. Also appreciate the specific sock recs – I am going to buy some options to see if I can find anything easier to deal with than her current socks. At least her shoes are pretty easy.
I also think giving her the option to finish eating in the car helps; she’s not a fast eater especially in the morning. Takes the pressure off to be ‘done’ before finishing getting ready. We don’t usually have the kids do a lot of eating in the car (just to avoid mess) but sometimes it just makes logistical sense (ie when they are hangry after a sport or activity) and I am willing to do anything to make the mornings feel easier.
It’s January 23 . . . just 9 days left in the month
SERIOUSLY DIDN’T THE YEAR JUST START? I admit I’m a little sad I’m not farther along on my own January goals — but many of them will be fine to roll over into February (ahem, decluttering + estate planning . . .sigh). This was a bit of a weird month with call throwing me for a loop just when the year was getting started! Also, Josh and I haven’t had a call-free weekend since 2023 (okay that sounds worse than it actually is). Not trying to wish the days away, but I’m very much looking forward to this weekend since we are BOTH OFF!
I do have “buy work shoes” on there. I could probably accomplish this goal. I want these and they are on serious sale but out in my size ๐

Re: finishing breakfast in the car…when my son was young and in the summers on the way to whatever camp he was going to he had “car waffles”. Frozen waffles with a smear of jelly in a paper towel. Eat and then wipe your mouth. Most nutritious? Nah but got us out of the house on time.
This past summer he (now nearly 19) said “Mom, remember car waffles?” “yep, bud I do.” You do what you need to do. LOL
aww I LOVE that he brought up the memory!! that is super sweet, truly!
Dorothy is a teeny person (still a medium in most kid lines), and still the size 2 Lulu hottie hots sort of fit– which makes me feel better about the way my 8’s fit me LOL LOL LOL. But for realz I wish these were not marketed for adults.
Lulu sizes def run 1-2 smaller than ‘regular’ sizes at other stores — which helps if you have a small tween! Josh once did not realize that and got me some super tiny items I had to exchange for 2 sizes up. Ahhh well now I think everyone in the home knows my lulu size since it’s often what I get for mother’s day ๐ (and I’m not complaining!)
Yes I am glad I’ve figured this out because I have a 5’3″ but still kid-shaped 11 year old and Lulu adult clothes fit her legs and waist. I am definitely not this shape but it’s nice to have options for my kidlet. ๐
That sounds like a fun weekend! We braved the storm hitting the UK and headed to Newcastle on the train to meet friends at the museum, which was very nice. I was heading to Wales, and my husband/son were headed back to Scotland. Their train got cancelled but they ran for another one and were fine, whilst I spent many more hours than expected, but we all got to our destinations in the end.
I realised my big-footed kid was in socks he’d had for years which I think didn’t help? They were too small and shrunken. I got some cheap Pokemon socks from H&M in big kid size and they are way easier to put on. The problem is that they are neon and his school uniform trousers are getting a bit short so there is black shoe, 2 inches of highlighter yellow socks, black joggers…but school isn’t super strict and he doesn’t seem to realise/care that this looks a bit goofy.
I have those shoes. They are OK, but not as comfortable as you might think. I wouldn’t want to wear them on a long work day where I was walking a lot.
Ok good to know!!!!
Love this update, and sounds like such a fun weekend. My son (7 yrs) is notoriously slow in the morning. We often have to do toast or protein shake in the car which is mostly me saying, please hurry, we’re almost there the entire time. Ugh. Anywho, I love G’s shoes in that pic. Do you mind sharing the link to them? I have a daughter about the same age and needing new tennis shoes.

They are super durable too- sheโs worn them all year and they are in great shape.
Oh, I’m trying to get my daughter to see Mean Girls. I mean- not that it’s a must-see, I just want to get her out of the house and doing something with friends on the weekend. I think she would like it.
I know- January is flying by. I also feel like I got off to a slow start with 2024 goals and planning, I guess because we took a short trip in the middle of the month, and it felt like the year didn’t officially start until we got back??? Anyway I don’t know if you listen to the Girl Next Door podcast, but they just released their “Intentions for 2024” episode today- so it seems like everyone is still just getting started. I say, “February is the new January!”
Love GND! Just started that ep this morning. Kelsey and I text sometimes and do phone calls together ๐ love their stuff!!
February –> decluttering –> yes. Tell me when ๐
I’m also going to be bumping many of my January goals to February. I think next year the goal for January might be “remember to write correct year” and if that happens 50% of the time I’ll call it a win! Here’s to February!
