5 on a Friday: Blog Links Edition!

August 23, 2024

1- San is training for her first marathon and I am excited to cheer her on, AND I appreciate the detailed and methodical nature of her recap posts 🙂 I have a very strong suspicion this will not be her only marathon. Certain personality types are just made for training plans (yes, I exist in this category as well).

2- Coco is on a quest to conquer distraction. Love her list of concrete strategies. EXCEPT as a podcaster – don’t unsubscribe to your favorite shows! My podcast strategy is sort of the opposite of hers: I subscribe to far more than I could listen to, and then I select my playlists out of the options that come in. Then I clear out my queue every week. This way I can see what topics are out there on a given week and can make intentional choices from all of the options. I always feel grateful when I do this because it’s so cool that there is so much free and engaging content out there in the podcast world!

3- Physician on Fire’s Leif wrote a travel post comparing a more luxurious trip to Vietnam with a budget-friendly trip to Peru! Leif is the founder of PoF but doesn’t post that often anymore, I love it when he does. Super interesting to see his family travel WITH price tags included. Also, Peru sounds very cool. I already know I would love the food (we have some really good Peruvian restaurants here).

4- Un-Fancy is doing a capsule wardrobe!!! My current capsule wardrobe is scrubs and running gear plus jeans and T shirts, but hey — I can dream about elevating my look eventually. I am considering booking a style session with her (she is offering these via FaceTime!).

Okay, this is not a blog link but feels worthy of a mention:

5- New Sabrina Carpenter is out today, so the school drive commute’s soundtrack has already been decided . . .

Some of my kids have been counting down to her release date for weeks. Gotta love the enthusiasm.

PS: I keep getting ads for pumpkin flavored things. I know it’s back to school for many (including us) but can we agree it’s NOT FALL YET? Seeing that and then running in 80 degree weather at dawn triggers rage somehow!

Happy weekend! We have our first soccer tournament of the season. I’m excited to watch some games after the ~4 month hiatus!

thanks for the shout out! I haven’t listened to any podcast since I started wellness during my TM runs. August seems to be the month of fiction, listening and reading all fiction.
I am ssoooooo lazy with wardrobe. my uniform: running short and tee, batik for work, jean short and t-shirt on weekend when going out. only 3 outfits hahah

Yay new Sabrina Carpenter! Maybe this will get Minnie out of her music rut

Ha ha, I’m at Starbucks right now and they’ve rolled out their pumpkin drinks! It doesn’t bother me- I actually like it. Since we don’t get a real fall, I like to enjoy “pretend fall.”
I agree- podcasts are amazing and there’s so much out there!

Thanks for the shoutout and the support, Sarah. I appreciate that (and it does sound we’re much alike :)).

I don’t listen to many podcasts (although I like the idea) and I like that you just pick and choose from your list every week and don’t worry about listening to them all.

Love the PoF travel post–I could read posts like that all day long. I love when people get into the nitty gritty of travel costs. It was especially interesting because pre-kids those happen to be the two “big” trips my husband and I took–Peru for our honeymoon, and Vietnam before. This was back before I tracked all our travel expenditures like I do now, but I think our costs for both trips were probably roughly in line with his Peru expenses (but a little cheaper because this was 13+ years ago!), but it’s fun to see how our itineraries match up, and to imagine Peru with kids–I think it would be fantastic.

I don’t listen to many podcasts anymore so have really curated my listens. I’m enjoying podcasts that are 20 minutes or less as that is my commute time and the only time I listen. After listening to both your podcasts for years plus other podcasts that have similar content, I have noticed I’m not learning anything new and it’s all repetitive. I just realised that the ones I listen to don’t have ads which I like. A lot of the ones I was listening to where also trying to sell me something like courses or coaching or sign up to our patreon and it was making me angry. I have started to relisten to BOBW and I’m enjoying the no hidden agenda and that you were working at a say 9-5 normal job and not as an influencer. Any hoo just what I have noticed about podcasts and myself.

To be fair, it does cost lots of time and money to do a podcast so the ads are there to make it a sustainable pursuit. I hope we strike a good balance there at least for some. I love that there are a lot of podcasts to choose from!!

You said it well Chloe. I was trying to think what was putting me off podcasts and yes it’s the ads and the push. I also much preferred the earlier days of BOBW as it was very relatable as Sarah was working a traditional 9-5 like the rest of us. I have also stopped listening to the Girl Next Door pod as it’s the same. Both hosts use to be traditional workers and have now stepped away from that. Both those podcasts were first created as there was a gap in podcasts that weren’t influencers but now they have become the influencers 🤦🏽‍♀️ I have been on the lookout for more podcasts that are not influencers but to no avail. If anyone has any recommendations I’m all ears!

It think it’s a bit much to expect podcasters to have full time jobs, families and not do ads in order to be relatable. It seems like that would quickly become unsustainable for many of them. I often skip the commercials, so that doesn’t bother me. And I join Patreon when I feel like I’m getting beneficial information and want to show my appreciation, but I don’t feel pressured to do so.
