Haha, nowhere in my crowded December calendar did it say:
“Get sick with a hacking cough, disgusting throat, and malaise.”
But, here we are!
(Wouldn’t it be weird if we COULD schedule our ailments?)
I did see patients yesterday (was able to mask and somehow was able to suppress my cough for the most part), but really struggled to get through the day. It made me realize how GOOD I normally feel! My everyday energy level and ability to sustain high-level concentration is normally . . . pretty darn good! (It wasn’t, yesterday; there was a huge difference.) That is something I know should never be taken for granted.
Obviously I haven’t run (nothing since my failed 20 on Sunday) — though ironically we’ve had AMAAAAAZING weather. Ha! Of course.
I actually am not upset about this; other events in life have provided me with perspective and I’m just like, “whelp, okay this happened!”. I think it also helps that I felt meh about the training cycle to begin with; if things had gone perfectly I’d be more sad to potentially mess it up. My race is in 12 days and whatever happens will happen.
I would much rather be sick this week than next week.
And I’d much rather be a little sick than injured.
And in the grand scheme of things I know a URI is nothing.
I mostly cleared my schedule so hoping to really rest a lot today (though I also am very very overdue for a massive email catchup, oops).
PS: A has it too; she is currently in bed. She will miss an orthodontist appointment and gymnastics today in addition to school. Josh seems to have a super mild version which is typical (his immune system is next level). Will have to wait and see if the other shoe will drop with the other kids . . .

Ugh! But as you said- better sick than injured, and better this week than next. It is a cruel irony to be sick and miss running when the weather is PERFECT- but we’ll have lots of great weather ahead of us. I hope you and A feel better soon- and I hope the other kids stay healthy.
Fingers crossed! Packed December schedules just don’t allow for any accidents, emergencies, or life to happen. Kiddo is sniffling, and colleagues organised a team building hike today. It was more of a climb than a stroll, and I slipped on the ice and my knee is KILLING me. I’m hoping it doesn’t massively screw up my week. Hoping you can take it easy today and tomorrow.
oh no!!! I hope it heals quickly! 🙁 🙁
Hope you feel better soon! Agreed that it’s better to be sick now than next week. It means you have just enough time to get better but not so much time that you could get sick again, right? At least that’s the way I rationalize these things to myself.
Yes totally agree! There’s never a GOOD time to get sick but at least this isn’t the worst time.
I’m sorry you’re sick again, Sarah. You seem to get sick a lot at inopportune times! Get better soon!
I feel like there are few opportune times! Haha. But at least this is better than next week or even on our ski trip.
Ugh, feel better! I have a similar husband – I’ll be knocked out for several days, and he’s just sluggish for 1. Both good because we’re rarely both down for the count, but also frustrating to have such different reactions to the same germs.
I hope you bounce back fast! Better this week than really close to the race. You have a great perspective about this. I guess that is one benefit of aging! We can see the big picture and recognize that it can always be worse. But it sucks to be sick! Lucky Josh! My husband also has an amazing immune system. He’s never thrown up in all the years I’ve known him whereas I got every stomach bug the kids got – and some they didn’t, especially when I was BF’ing! Although last year he got influenza A and that turned into pneumonia. So he can be leveled, it just rarely happens.
Oh nuts. I agree though – it sounds like timing-wise it was better to be sick now than next week. Also, an injury would be really bad. I hope the rest of the gang steers clear and that you are back on your feet in no time.
