5 on a Friday: Various Positive Things

January 24, 2025

1- I loved this post from Jenny: Our Best Days. Do YOU think your best days are up ahead, or behind? (I’m going with ahead, I feel like each decade has topped the prior one so far?!)

2- I learned last week that Currently Reading’s Roxana reads here — so I was delighted to listen to the recent ep: Mary and Roxana’s Top Reads of 2024! LOVED the picks, Roxana!!

3- OFFICIAL book announcement is out!! Unfortunately, I can’t link to it because it’s via a subscription newsletter (something called Publisher’s Lunch). But yes!! It’s out there!! This was really thrilling to see! I will (obviously) let you know when preorders are available. Probably need to have a cover first (I am sure this is underway, though I haven’t seen any options yet!).

4- I really enjoyed the interview with Nancy Reddy on Another Mother Runner — her book is called The Good Mother Myth and it’s earned a spot in my NF queue.

Fun fact: AMR was one of the first podcast I ever listened to (after This American Life!)

5- Windfall update: Not doing anything exciting with it! It was honestly more of an interesting thought experiment, and I dumped it into “Emergency” without our YNAB. But it makes me feel better about my upcoming Invisalign expense!! (My appt to get the scans to have the molds made is Monday!)

Woo hoo Official Book Announcement!!! That’s quite an accomplishment to put on the Friday 5!

I agree that every decade is better, and what luck that I get to join the next decade this year! 50s here I come!

Congrats on the book announcement. Your blog introduced me to AMR actually and I attended a retreat and did Many Happy Miles last year as a result – it’s been one of my favorites for the last two years or so. So thank you!

I hope my best days are still ahead of me, but I kind of feel like they aren’t. My youngest of four is 12 and my oldest is in college so we are completely out of the kid years and even starting to have an empty nest. We are also moving back “home” for the first time since we left high school and while it is good and exciting, it just feels like our days of adventuring are over. We have moved a lot and done some really fun things, but I think it is time to be more stable but that doesn’t sound fun haha. I’m only 43 so hopefully I have a long, full life left 🙂

Mazel Tov! 😉 I feel like you set a record in how quickly you pitched, sold, and wrote this book. I sure hope you are giving yourself the credit you deserve! And a massage or two 🙂

Congratulations on your book announcement! So excited for you and can’t wait to pre-order! Also, as an REALLY random aside, I randomly listened to Sharon McMahon’s podcast (“Here’s where it gets interesting”) on the behind the scenes of her book “The Small and the Mighty” (3 episodes total on this) and the episode on the cover (Season 18, Episode 3) was surprisingly fascinating and funny! Not sure if she’s on your radar, but could be worth a listen as you’re navigating this process. Or just if you need a laugh!

A huge congratulations on the book! I think you should spend some of that found money on a celebratory dinner 🙂

Your book news is so exciting! I’m so happy for you and can’t wait to pre-order it as well! I just added that nonfiction book about mothering to my TBR. It sounds really great. We need more realistic voices about parenting.

I feel like this week kind of took the wind out of my sails to some extent. Work was so freaking busy so I didn’t have much time to rest and felt so tired for most of the week. I’m hoping to get some solid stretches of rest this weekend though. And the new cycle didn’t help although I’m avoiding reading headlines as much as possible. It’s nice to be out of the cast though so that’s a positive although I feel a little vulnerable in this moment since my incision/joint is still really healing.

I’m so impressed how you crushed the book goal, Sarah! It felt like you conceived of and wrote the book in record time!

Yes and no – the material has been in existence for years because it’s essentially the scaffold of BLPA! But yes it took book form in about ~6 months!

    Congrats on the book announcement!

Another small world moment – I was neighbors/friends in Colo Springs with Dimity of Another Mother Runner years ago. I “tested” running bras for her back when I ran regularly (before tennis took over😉)

Congratulations Sarah, this is so exciting! Had obviously suspected you had a book deal for the past couple months but has been great to have you confirm it officially.

Omg thanks for the shout out!!! And… I’m so excited about your book. I want to hear all about what goes into picking a cover??? I’m all ready to preorder when it’s time!

So exciting about the book announcement! Congratulations.

Re: the “myth of the good mother” — one of my favorite concepts about motherhood comes from psychologist Donald Winnicott, who worked in the field of mother-baby attachment. He said no child needs (or should have!) a perfect mother. What they need is a *good enough* mother. I feel like there is such freedom in that. I don’t need to try to be a perfect mom for my kids, and in fact that’s counter to their growth. I just need to show up and be good enough. 🙂

    So exciting! Congratulations, Sarah!
