BLP #265: August Q&A: Hobonichi, Taylor Swift, and More

August 25, 2025

In today’s episode, I open with two things that made my (tough) week a bit better: Hobonchi launch fun and the Taylor Swift New Heights interview (highly recommend the video version)! Then, I answer 6 questions from the August Q&A collection.

Topics include:

  • Can you use Apple Notes to include attachments + graphics
  • Opinion on big projects: is it better to do fewer longer sessions, or consistent shorter ones?
  • Ideal week during the newborn phase: yay or nay, and suggestions for an alternative if not?
  • Are there circumstances where a ‘work specific’ planner can make sense?
  • Work & rest-of-life planning sessions: separate or together?
  • How long does it take to implement the routines of the nested planning sessions?

Get your questions to me and you may hear the answers on a future episode! Email at sarah hart unger @ gmail or leave a comment on the show notes here.

I used Evernote as a cross-platform catch-all for notes, docs, etc. for nearly a decade. When it became cost-prohibitive a few years ago, I began searching for a replacement. I have tried many different apps and recently landed on UpNote. It is accessible on both Apple and PC, and very easy to customize and use.

Please no newborn content. I still see too much of this sort of content in general because I have ovaries, and I would like to delete that part of my life from my memory permanently.

One of six bullet points…easy enough for those past that stage to skip omdg/sesb.

Are you ok? Seriously. Stop being a bully.

I use OneNote instead of Apple Notes. I can use it on my work laptop which largely restricts access to most other document sharing type apps while on our network so that was important to me since I work in an office 3 days a week.

I’m team separate planners for work and personal life. I have a corporate role with set hours. I do not want to see work stuff after work, and I’ve got enough tasks there that it warrants it’s own space. I lug my personal planner to/from work and leave it out on my desk to jot down random tasks (usually to do that evening) as I think of them, and to track any personal items I might be tracking that month. Generally they stay every separate, with some very notable exceptions:
    – My kids days off of school are in my work calendar (I just send a calendar notice to work and personal emails, as well as relevant family members)
    – Any vacations go on both calendars
    – Any personal appts that happen during work hours (or necessitate being super diligent about leaving work on time) get cc’d to my work calendar.
    – If there is any personal task that is critical to get done during the workday (time sensitive tasks like signup for a camp that opens at 10am and sells out in minutes)
    – Any work events happening outside of normal working hours get added to my personal calendar (like my weekly tag ups with international colleagues, which happen in my evening hours due to time zone differences). No details, just a work block so I don’t accidently schedule something personal during that time.

I think if I had a part time self-employment role or a role where work/life was a lot more fluid, I might consider a single planner.

I use Google keep over apple notes because: 1) I can use it on my non-apple pc, and 2) I can share it with my android using husband. It has the ability to add pictures and voice notes, it’s searchable, and has similar features (with the exception of the holy grail picture to pdf function that I use my apple notes for)
I’m a new adopter to it, so am still figuring it out, but it is a good tool

Well you know I’m Team Google, so like Adrienne, I use Google Keep. I am honestly a little confused sometimes why more people DON’T use the Google products, when I feel like so many people already use Gmail and Google Calendar?? I mean, Google Keep (like Apple Notes) and Google Tasks (task list manager) are literally embedded right into the sidebar for both GCal and Gmail! So I’m not sure if maybe some people just don’t realize they are there? Sometimes I get the sense that people don’t know the other tools beside gmail/gcal exist. They can all be opened in full desktop view and have accessibility from either phone or pc.

I know there are pros and cons to all the systems out there and it totally depends on personal preference of course, too, but I personally love the cohesive nature of using the Google systems all together!

I wanted to share that C (and anyone else on a PC) can still use Apple Notes like you do. The way to do that as a PC user is to log into your icloud account via the web. It will sync to the Notes on your phone. I personally use Evernote (paid membership as of last year) but think they are interchangeable in terms of functionality.

I was going to say the same thing! I’m a Mac user (and solely Apple Notes) for personal computing but if I need something on my work PC, I can always login to my iCloud account from a PC browser. Because it’s also browser based, most corporations don’t restrict this website if that is a concern. Not exactly the same as the Mac platform but definitely accessible from PC environments!

Sarah! I was also sick and ALSO watched the entirety of the 2 hour Taylor Swift interview! She has such good energy so even non-Swifties should enjoy! But I’m with you! It was a great 2 hours while being under the weather! Well worth it!

Hi! I’d love some more explanations as to how you keep your Apple Notes organized! It sounds like you’re using more than a search function to find things!

For C, if Apple Notes doesn’t have all those functions for you, is it possible you have an older phone or older version of iOS?
