I used up all of my deep thoughts already I think. And somehow don’t have a whole bunch of things to link as I often do!
1- Inquiring minds might want to know whether yesterday’s “highlight of the day” came to fruition. Thankfully yes. But one astute reader did point out one would need to be careful to avoid repeatedly promising yourself things that might not work out.

Setting the bar fairly low would help, I think. (But not SO low as to defeat the purpose). Tonight I am looking forward to eating ice cream and reading some more of Ninth House and while there are some things that could mess this up (GI bug?) . . . PROBABLY it will all work out.
I took the opportunity to update my 5 year travel dream list. It’s aspirational but I figured I might as well at least write down what sounds awesome; we can see what actually manifests.
2- I was so excited to make the cake linked in Suzanne’s post . . . but then she said it didn’t come out as well as she thought! I might try it anyway?! Do you have a favorite fall apple dessert? I feel the time has come to make one.
3- How did I miss this?!

First of all, I thought she retired after Swan Song.
Second of all, I am 100% going to read this.
4- I finally finalized my audiobook recording dates!! It took some time and I was starting to get nervous, but if you’re hoping to experience Best Laid Plans: A Simple System for Living a Life You Love narrated by me . . . you will be able to. Yay! This is my first recording rodeo and I know I am going to have to work VERY VERY HARD to not read too fast. (But I will have people there forcing me to slow down, I think, so that will be good.)
5- Up this weekend: This time I am FOR REAL making it to TJs to buy all the pumpkin things. (Current faves: the spicy pumpkin samosas and the pumpkin salsa with fall leaf chips. What am I missing out on?!)
PS: Everyone please send healing thoughts and love Lisa’s way.
PPS: Hobonchi is still stuck in Indianapolis in some kind of “fish and wildlife” hold based on what the Fedex rep told me. (There is no fish nor wildlife in the package, but I guess they need to be absolutely sure of that.) If it is still there by December 1st I’ll request a refund and order from another shop but I’ll be sooooo sad!

Best apple cake ever, thanks for reminding me! It’s time to make it!

I like to buy TJ’s pie pumpkins to roast and bake into non healthy desserts– bought one today in fact. I also am LOVING the fall candle trip and the pumpkin hand cream.
Ooooo! You’re reading your audio book! I love that!
I would love to hear what’s on your 5 year travel list. I just retired and turned 65 so I’m trying to figure out what to do with the rest of my life. Also, your morbid death discussion earlier this week hit a little too close to home. Time to get busy before I get too old. Ha!
Make sure you get the Trader Joes frozen butternut squash mac and cheese! The butternut squash lasagna is also great! Pumpkin butter has a lot of sugar but is delicious. We also really like the pumpkin cream cheese and pumpkin Greek yogurt.
Sarah! I went to an event with Elin Hilderbrand in the spring and she told us about the book. She explained it this way- that her daughter went to a fancy prep school in Rhode Island and kept calling Elin with all these juicy crazy stories and Elin said, “Shelby you need to write a book about this!!” And so the idea was born… I am so excited to read it….
Oh! I bet she went to St. George’s! I think I’m going to have to read this. Prep school drama is one of my favorite genres. 🙂
This apple cake recipe is everything https://smittenkitchen.com/2021/10/big-apple-crumb-cake/
I 2nd this!
This looks insanely good
Would also love to hear the 5-year travel dreams list! I did mine recently (5 years roughly corresponds with my last 5 years of both kids at home): Alaska (including Denali), a safari in South Africa or Kenya, Seattle/Olympic, hiking Grand Canyon rim to river to rim, Acadia, Japan, NYC, and…maybe somewhere in Europe (I struggle to narrow down Europe!). Definitely reaches on there, but I think overall many are doable and I’d be happy if this was more of a 10-year plan as I don’t expect my kids to completely stop wanting to travel with us when they’re 18…if we’re paying 🙂
There is a great interview with Elin and Shelby on the Bad on Paper podcast about writing The Academy!
I make a crowd-pleasing apple galette with, randomly, the “lids” part of this recipe for the crust and then a basic apple pie filling. I am not good at pretty crusts – don’t have the patience – so this means I don’t even need to try. Oh, and the secret for easy crusts is to put the butter in the freezer and then grate it.
It would be funny (and sad!) if it turned out there was actually some kind of hobonichi exotic animal smuggling ring and your planner really did have wildlife…
Oops, forgot to link the crust: https://smittenkitchen.com/2012/10/pancetta-white-bean-and-swiss-chard-pot-pies/
Not a food but the cinnamon roll lip mask from TJ is all fall vibes all the time.
