Weekend

Fun + Eventful Weekend!

February 8, 2026

It has been a full + fun weekend around here (and it’s not over yet — having friends over for the Super Bowl tonight and we are going to turn lobster tails into lobster rolls . . . wish us luck).

Friday night was A’s gym meet – I was SOOO dreading the time frame but in the end it was totally fine! I LUCKED OUT on the call front (was able to leave at 4:30, entirely signed out, no issues or loose ends hanging!), and the part of Miami where the meet was really wasn’t the traffic nightmare I had been anticipating.

(Plus, pro local tip –> driving NORTH in the AM / SOUTH in the PM is always a million times better than the reverse, which is why I survived commuting to Broward for those 6 years we lived in Miami Beach.)

ANYWAY! Josh was able to come too, and A had a successful meet and it was fun (nerve-wracking, but fun) to watch, and we made it home before 11 pm at which point I promptly face planted and slept 8 hours. Hooray!

Saturday G had tennis, and I took a glorious walk around. I know there are really cold temps elsewhere so I feel almost guilty posting this pic, but it was truly lovely.

(I promise, we will swap somewhere around May/June when we enter Inferno Season for 5 straight months)

We got home and took a very short bike ride (with Genevieve) to visit with Josh’s old coworker who has since moved to Dallas (they were visiting his parents, who live in our neighborhood!).

and G made me this, love it even though “cool” is on there twice. I guess because I am THAT COOL.

AND THEN we headed out to Back to the Future at the Broward Center!

first “long form performance” of the year!

I really enjoyed it – some of the music was just okay but the effects and 50s/80s vibes were excellent! The kids mostly liked it (we had one who was . . . let’s just say less enthusiastic, but everyone made it through).

THEN we stopped at Whole Foods and let the kids pick up sushi and attempted to buy lobster (didn’t work out, but Josh got it this AM) because Josh and I headed out for another sports bar date night.

(WHO ARE WE?!)

We headed to SoFL establishment Flanigan’s and got a seat at the bar with a perfect view of the Duke/UNC game (well, we asked them to put it on that particular TV). We texted Duke friends while it was playing which added to the fun (this is an aspect of sports I can get behind – it DOES bring people together).

We did lose at the very end, but . . . can’t win ’em all.

ANYWAY YES – very very full weekend but actually did not feel hectic in the least!? Today is fairly chill — C has flag football and I will be up to my elbows in lobster but otherwise all good. I *am* a bit unexcited about having clinic tomorrow but I moved my clinical work day to Monday this week because yes, it is time for the aforementioned colonoscopy. (It is THURSDAY, wish me luck.)

Dilemma:

I just found out my college a cappella group is having a reunion in Wiliamstown in April and today I found out that two old friends are going (friends that I never get to see at reunions, even, because they are another class). As part of the reunion you get to sing with those in your ‘era’! How fun is that!?

BUT/AND. OUR SPRING IS ALREADY REALLY REALL YFULL. Insane! Like, in April we already have a trip to Naples, A’s State Meet in Gainesville (5-6 hrs away), Josh has his marathon (at least I’m not traveling for that!), and then the April/May weekend I’m going to to San Francisco. I suspect Josh may have to take call that weekend, so I’d have to ask our nanny to work some extra hours (she would likely be fine w that though!).

ON THE COUNTERPOINT, going to PHL for one night was actually totally worth it and in retrospect wasn’t a terribly big deal, logistics-wise. And I can get a flight on points on JetBlue (and possibly hotels on points too, if I find decent deals) making this a pretty inexpensive endeavor.

So yeah, I guess I kind of want to do it. (But, I also know I’ve felt overloaded in the past when I take on too much travel. I can’t quite tell if future me is going to YELL at past me for creating a schedule that at least on paper appears to be quite overwhelming. Or if future me is going to have regret about NOT going!)

Do the a cappella reunion. We’re in the midst of 3 flights which will get us to New Zealand next week. PHL-SFO, then SFO to Nadi Fiji and then Nadi-Auckland. Using SFO and Nadi as free overnight stops using hotel points. The daughter of close friends had her wedding scheduled for the night before our morning departure for our big trip-and the reception was a 4 hour round trip drive for us. I stressed about whether or not to go-we ended up going and had a great time! I think that squeezing in time with people who are important to you is so worth it!

People are worth a short-term disruption.

Maybe April SHU will yell, but deathbed SHU will be glad she went, don’t you think?

Go on the trip. Life experiences are always worth it. I had my first colonoscopy this year (age 51) and it really was not that bad. The 12+ hours prior to the procedure were bad (that stuff that you have to drink is AWFUL!), but I did not find much else to be bad. You have to get up a zillion times in the middle of the night to **, but the procedure day is a piece of cake. The nurses and doctors were so kind, I just came home and read my book, had soup (nothing else sounded good) and went to bed. I was 100% normal by day 2. I have to go back in 5 years, but the piece of mind is 100% worth it.
