5 on a Friday: Seasonal Shift Edition

March 27, 2026

1- I feel really, really ready for a shift in season. I spent my morning pages session this morning on a postmortem of Q1, and it was such a weird one for me! I’m actually really happy with how consistent I was with various things (including my planning/tracking methods themselves) AND sad about how some of it felt for me. Today is my last day of work before spring break, so I’m calling tomorrow the (? unofficial) start to Q2.

I started so many books in March and finished so few!

2- I really appreciated this NYT piece (gift link – hopefully it works!) by a former body positivity influencer (learned about it via Pantsuit Politics, who had mixed feelings on the piece). I see the health impacts of obesity in children and teens every day. I think the causes are incredibly multifactorial and it’s a very complex problem, but to not see it as a problem at all never made sense to me as I prescribe medications to treat type 2 diabetes in teens.

3- Shout out to Rachelle In Theory for a mention in her newsletter yesterday (she referenced the podcast ep I recorded with Cal Newport earlier this month)! If you are looking for mostly-analog planning inspo and haven’t seen Rachelle’s channel, I highly recommend checking it out.

4- I read an interesting newsletter post from Oliver Burkeman this morning:Do what you want.

If you’re overwhelmed by the feeling that the world is falling apart – or just overwhelmed by your to-do list, or stuck in any kind of rut – there’s a solid chance you’d benefit from reorienting your life in the direction of what you actually want to be doing with it, instead of how you think you ought to be living it.”

Hmm. For me, part of this is caring less and less about what anyone else thinks about what I want, and doing it anyway.

5- Happy spring break if you are embarking on yours next week like we are! I feel like everyone I know is traveling right now, and many to really far-flung places!! Our spring break plans are a bit lower key (not leaving the state or getting on a plane) but I’m really excited about them. AND, I plan to set some time aside midweek (between trips!) to reflect on / do my planning and goal-setting for Q2.

ONWARD, UPWARD, and ALL OF THAT!!!!

I’m commenting from our flight to DC! I’m only taking the 8yo so it’s super easy! We are staying with my sister so it’s a blend of family time and sight seeing. We should see some cherry blossoms! We haven’t traveled during spring break in a couple of years. I was able to use a companion pass for Paul’s seat so it was a pretty cheap trip! Have a great time with your sister and niece!

It’s possible to want to lose weight because you want to feel better, be able to do more things, and for your health and *at the same time* not hate yourself. It seems like a lot of the body positivity movement focused on the latter piece by saying the first part was unnecessary trash, which just isn’t true for a lot of people. GLP-1s make you less hungry so you can focus on other things. I don’t see how that is a bad thing. As far as the aesthetics piece is concerned, it is no secret that people who are considered attractive get treated better throughout life. Not sure why it’s necessary to shame people for wanting to be treated better…

Grateful to be in a position where I do get to choose what I want to do with my life! Enjoy your Spring Break!

YESSS to all of that. (have literally written 3 GLP RXs in the past hour . . .)

I agree so much with the “do what you want” theory. That was actually my #1 takeaway from 168 Hours – we all get 168 hours each week, so there is no reason not to put a decent number of those hours toward things that you enjoy and things that make you a better person. We are all upset by what we see on the news, and we all have “not fun” things that we have to do as adults. That’s all the more reason for each of us to live our best lives and to be the best person that we can be. It’s the ultimate act of “think globally, act locally”.

Wow, loved this video by the former body positivity influencer. Thanks for sharing the gift link! I work as a pediatric liver transplant dietitian and see teen patients with fatty liver. I really appreciate her perspective and thoughts!
