I received a few notes from readers about the Nor’Easter apparently on its way to . . . well, pretty much exactly where I am headed. I had a moment of panic but then got on the plane anyway! We are staying in two houses — one owned by my friend Emily, and one essentially next door. Emily is confident that our shelters will withstand the wind and rain (we are not on the water or in a low-lying area but instead up on a hill). She also has a generator (!).
So, GAME ON, CAPE COD. If we are stuck indoors together it will basically be like a normal winter day in college. Ha.
(We walked to classes even in blizzard conditions to my memory, but there were plenty of weekend days featuring zero trips outside. It was cozy, okay?)
FALL THINGS I AM EXCITED FOR:
Reading this
Stationery shopping!!! (Fall = Hobonichi season)
Having a reason to wear the sweaters I generally reserve for Montana
Sitting around chatting and eating snacks and drinking hot things
Seeing even the tiniest bit of changing leaves (apparently there might be some hope for greater than zero color change, which is more than I can say for FL, ever)
Now, if they would just start the coffee service on this flight I would be very, very happy.

Good for you for getting on the plane! Like you say, if it’s bad you’ll still have a good time, and if it turns out better than expected you’ll have an even better time. Enjoy your long weekend!

OFFS. This is SO ON BRAND FOR 2026 for you. Of COURSE there’s a huge storm hitting Cape Cod the weekend you are visiting! It will be a different trip than you imagined but I know you’ll still have a great time as it’s all about connecting with your college friends!

Gah, stupid storm!!! I’m sorry, Sarah—and I’m glad you are in the headspace to be able to remember that the point of this trip is the people, not the place. (Good weather would not have gone unappreciated, though!!) wishing you safe travels and cozy times with your friends riding out this storm.

Enjoy Cape Cod with friends – indoors or outdoors, if possible!
Enjoy it! Since we go there for vacation to visit family every summer (my MIL grew up in Barnstable) I have experienced many rainy Cape Cod days over the years. However, in our case, we were usually trying to find kid-friendly indoor activities to do to get out of the house and not drive the in-laws crazy! Hunkering down with your friends will be very cozy and fun by contrast! I hope you get at least a bit of a break in the weather and get to enjoy some outdoor time–it is a really beautiful and special place.
