playlist

November 18, 2008

the other day, lee asked for some playlist recommendations. i actually don’t typically make playlists of songs per se, because my runs are generally long enough to get in a whole album and i like hearing something from start to finish.

currently on my fat little green nano:
bird and the bee, the bird and the bee
brandi carlile, brandi carlile
the shins, chutes too narrow
bon iver, for emma, forever ago
the submarines, honeysuckle weeks
bright eyes, letting off the happiness
sara bareilles, little voice
sigur ros, med sud i eyrum vid spilum endalaust
santogold, santogold
the thrills, so much for the city
rilo kiley, under the blacklight
she & him, volume one
rufus wainwright, want one and want two
thao, we brave bee stings and all

rather than try to house my entire music collection on my nano, i refresh it with a different selection of 10 to 20 albums every month or so. that way, i get to know what is on there pretty well. i like to really *know* my music because i find i often enjoy songs more the more i hear the lyrics and background harmonies. this month, i picked mostly newish stuff, but i sometimes i gravitate more towards old comfy favorites like the beatles or ben folds.

i do from time to time make mixed playlists for races or car trips — both of which are coming up fairly soon for me! so i will share those as i make them.

all right, it’s off to another day in the NICU — actually, 1/2 NICU, 1/2 clinic. i like these days — not because i hate the NICU (i don’t — just the schedule), but because the variety is great and i miss being able to actually talk to my patients these days!

i can’t believe this month more than half over! where did it go??

run: finally, a good one! 5 miles easy (8:57/mi at 0.5% incline), listening to rilo kiley and she & him while reading the new runner’s world. also, i mustered up the willpower to get through some strength training:

– pushups, 2 x 10
– bent over rows, 15 lb weights, 2 x 12
– squats with ball, 8 lb weights, 2 x 12
– bicep curls on bosu, 12 lb weights, 2 x 10
– lateral/forward raises, 6 lb weights, 2 x 10 each side
– abs: 2 x 15 forward crunches and 2 x 15 bicycles

cooking: i made the super-healthy and easy black lentils and couscous salad from cooking light. i used red lentils instead of black, though, and when i cooked them for the length of time in the recipe (20 minutes), they completely broke down and turned into soup! however, tossed with the other ingredients they became a tasty binder of sorts and the whole thing worked out nicely. served with kashi TLC crackers, hummus, and the last of some argentinean malbec. MMM.
