up & at ’em

i woke up today feeling the best i’ve felt all week. is my acute-care virus finally dissipating? is it the run i managed to eke out yesterday? or, perhaps it’s the amazing grass energy bar i sampled pre-workout?


they didn’t include mojo in this ingredient list, but perhaps it belongs there.

[for the record, i liked this HLS-swag bar, except for the fake-out chocolate coating. i am not a fan of things that look like chocolate that aren’t! i found the ingredient list decent, but prefer the simplicity of lara. it did provide good energy for my run, though!]

anyway. bar digressions aside, i’m feeling a little better about life in general today. i have a full day of work ahead of me right now, but tomorrow (after a half-day of work), there are at least a few hours of recharge-time on the horizon!

bucking myself up: goals for the day
☑ work at getting into that flow state of mind at work. yes, there’s a lot to do, but with some focus i know i can make the day go by quickly AND take the best care of the les bébés. i will try to remain present at each task at hand until it’s done.

anti-complaining legislature goes into effect again . . . as of now.

☑ RUN! i know that running after work yesterday — as lackluster as the actual workout was — helped my mood tremendously. i will plan on jumping on the ‘mill again at the end of the day.

all right, it’s off to the races (or, the hospital). hopefully the babies will behave for me (they haven’t been — we’ve had to do 3 spinal taps in the past 2 days!), but if they don’t, i will handle it with grace (and without tears).



workout: a run that felt MUCH harder than it should have, but that i am glad i did. deconditioning vs lingering viral after-effects? i feel like i always wonder this when i come back to running after being sick, and i guess it doesn’t matter which one it is because things are always easier in a day or two.

the stats: 4.6 miles in 41 minutes; speeds of 9:13/mi to 8:49/mi, 0.5% incline. yes, i jumped off 4 minutes early. but i’m still considering this workout a success for having happened at all!

doin’ time: an easy recipe made even easier with josh’s help! thanks to him, we enjoyed this pasta dish last night a great deal. whole wheat spirals, string beans, potatos, and pesto — it’s an odd-sounding combo, but i think that it worked really nicely, the mild-tasting potatoes complementing the zesty pesto flavor. boiling the potatoes, string beans, and pasta in one pot made for an extremely easy prep. i would definitely recommend this recipe (on the sidebar for anyone interested!).

reading: is on the docket for today, if the babies will let me.

    glad your feeling better, being sick just makes EVERYTHING feel awful. hope the babies don&#39t give you too much trouble today

    That pasta looks good. I&#39m definitely going to have to bookmark it.

    I&#39m the opposite in regards to the Amazing Grass bar; I liked the fake chocolate. I tried the one that didn&#39t have it and didn&#39t like it as much. Glad you are feeling better today.

    I am definitely with you on your first goal for the day…sometimes I get caught up in my long list of things I have to do at work (many which need to be done at the same time!), that I get overwhelmed. Focusing on one task a time is important and is something I need to do more fully!

    Hope your day in the NICU is better than the last few. I&#39m starting my first NICU month (in our HUGE NICU with like 100 babies!) in about a week and am a bit nervous! Glad you&#39re feeling better.

    I think you should find a Martha scone recipe for you doing time and make a breakfast dinner. Those are always my go to for a quick and comfort filled dinner after a hard day!

    ali: yes! i freestyled it with some basil, parsley, parm, walnuts, and olive oil. oh, and salt + pepper. it tasted really good!
