But first thank you for the birthday love yesterday! It was really as lovely a birthday as one could hope for under current circumstances.
I wasn’t expecting so many amazing gifts but ended up with gourmet chocolate, Jeni’s ice cream, new workout wear, a Sephora gift card, AND flowers!!!
Photo montage below: Modeling bday gift outfit (from Vimmia). Plus another from Lulu (but I have to exchange the pants b/c Josh did not quiiiiite know the right size. He picked great things, though!)
I finished Next Year in Havana and came downstairs at ~5pm . . . and was promptly handed an Old Cuban (champagne / rum cocktail)! RANDOM but soooo perfect!
Bday dinner by Josh: steak Oscar, green beans almandine, rice pilaf. He said he was going for “Old World Fancy”
Mystery flowers (figured out they were from Laura!). No card OR source so I’m glad I figured it out!!
I also had a great time creating (rather spontaneously) a Spotify playlist of songs that have meant something to me throughout life! It’s a little silly but I GREATLY enjoyed it last night. If you’d like to hear/see it — here you go!
Anyway. It was a lovely 4-0. I’m sure that our DC/Virginia trip and the Inn at Little Washington would have been amazing, but hey — now I can continue to look forward to having that adventure in the future! I hope.
I did do some reflection/venting about some work-related challenges. With the concept of wasting time/life fresh on my mind . . . I am going to try to really work on some things that have been tough lately. More on that later perhaps though I will not be able to get much more specific on this public blog!! You will see Crucial Conversations on my book pile though!
And speaking of books – I have a 2020 Books Page now!! It’s up at the menu bar or you can check it out here. It was my fun project for the day yesterday (and yes it really was kind of fun!).

Happy belated birthday Sarah! Glad it was a good one. I have a birthday coming up in about a month, not really a milestone one but still not going to be like I pictured. I love how music can just take you back to a moment in time and reminds you of who you were back then and what you were feeling. I havenβt kept up with modern music but anything from the late 90s/early 2000s – I can still remember most of the lyrics from the hit songs and what the MTV music videos looked like!
So glad you had a lovely birthday!
My husband has a milestone one in July. He is introverted but it would be nice to have a small group of friends/ family to celebrate with.
We’re nearly on a month of level 4 lockdown, so who knows how long this will all last.
PS I love Crucial Conversations. I went on the two-day course and LOVED it!
Hi Sarah! I haven’t commented before but I saw that you were going to be traveling to the DC area for your birthday – specifically The Inn at Little Washington. I live in Arlington just outside DC. Thought I would share that I just saw an article about The Inn at Little Washington and they are thinking about using mannequins in the dining room to allow for social distancing. So you are only missing dining next to some mannequins π Happy Birthday!
I must say your blog has been my favorite to follow especially during these unusual times – you have done an amazing job staying real and sharing ups and downs. Thanks for that!
Take Care!
Thanks for sharing the Spotify playlist! I love the songs on it and it’ll be on repeat for me today. I read Crucial Conversations 6 years ago and it was very helpful at that point in my life. Happy Belated Birthday!
Where did you get that striped t shirt? Itβs really cute!
Madewell! Love their tees!
I love that playlist! I told my kid to shake something like a Polaroid the other day and she looked at my like I was crazy. Which maybe I am at this point. Hope that Crucial Conversations is helpful!! I need to re-read it!
Am I crazy, or are you holding up 50?!?
Oh dear, my middle aged brain cells have already stopped working! πππ not sure how that happened though I did screenshot from a video (easier to take self pix!) and maybe I was getting my hands into position ππ
Love this happy post! It seems like you had a lovely 40th birthday despite the weird times. The playlist is fab! I listened to it on my training 10k this morning, and literally LOL when βTwo of Heartsβ came on! Thanks for spreading your joy. ππ
Stacey Q was underrated π
great idea to keep a book page, I’ll do that too.
Work challenge is challenge, especially when you can’t talk about it publicly and with most of people at work.
Happy Birthday!!!
