5 on a Friday

February 19, 2021

1- TX. Thinking about TX readers who are still going through power outages and cold. NYT Article with links on how to help HERE. I just donated to Feeding Texas via the ActBlue link. (If anyone has personal recommendations on which organizations, I will take them — otherwise I’ll just pick one by end of day. #satisficer)

Addendum: Donated to Feeding Texas via the NYT link.

2- DR! I went to my PCP for the first time in >2 yrs because I needed an RX for a mammogram (my first) because . . . well, I’m >40. Nice to verify good blood pressure etc too.

3- I did book my ticket for NC. My sister is excited. I am excited. I’m sure my niece will even be excited! She is nearly 13 months and I have never met her. Truly a pandemic baby and my sister has made it through the first year of motherhood with almost no outside support. I don’t think we will be doing family air travel any time soon, but this trip feels important and I am glad to be going.

4- Current read: Emma Straub’s All Adults Here. So far I like it, but not as much as the last 2 books I read (esp Oona Out of Order!). I’m averaging about a novel a week these days. (10 days if I love it less, 5 days if I’m super into it).

5- Speedwork. Today’s run: 10 minute warmup / 3 x (30 sec fast / 30 sec recover) / 3 x (45 sec fast / 45 sec recover) / 3 x (60 sec fast / 60 sec recover) / cool down. I like these types of workouts, they go by very quickly!

(Note: I accidentally programmed the intervals for 30 minutes instead of 30 seconds and had to just use my stopwatch! Oops. Garmin fail. But it’s done!)

Happy Friday.

Honey Os and oranges and a happy 3 year old.

I’m down in Houston, TX. Please consider donating to Star of Hope. They provide a lot of resources to our Homeless population. The Houston Food Bank is also always in need. Thanks for pitching in. Power is improving, but water is under a boil advisory and the pressure is so low it’s hard to get enough water to do much.

So glad you will finally get to meet your niece. Kudos to your sister for getting through this long year on her own! I bet she is so excited to see you! I am not sure when my family will meet our baby. They have older kids in school so I feel like we won’t see them until this summer possibly?? We will see how things go here in Mn. My parents got their first dose recently and my MIL gets her 2nd dose on Monday so at least they will be protected soon!

I feel so bad for the people in TX. My husband has a former coworker who lives in Austin. He has running water and electricity so has 3 families living with his family right now. That state has been through a lot between flooding years ago and now this horrible cold and the destruction that comes with bursting pipes and such. So horrible

The city food banks are always a great choice! AOC also has an ActBlue page that will split your donation between five worthy orgs. I don’t know if I can add a link here, but just Google “AOC ActBlue Texas” and it’ll come up.

A lot of people on social media have been sharing mutual aid venmos and such, which is great, but before anyone donates to a smaller org right now, please check their social media first! Many orgs have said they’re at their capacity for what they can handle right now and are asking for donations to be directed elsewhere.

Sarah, thanks for so often pointing toward areas where help is needed and links to make it easier for people to participate. Gold star!
Related to that first note and your passing mention of satisficing…
I would LOVE to see you write about Satisficer vs. Maximizer. I’m a Maximizer about many things (and that is definitely my dominant tendency), but am also very much a satisficer in other areas (clutter drives me beserk, but I don’t care if my throw pillows are slightly askew; I’ll agonize for a week…or a month…about whether I bought the right toilet, but am not overly bothered my tub isn’t perfectly clean).

I’d love to hear your take (and reader comments) on what you maximize vs. satisfice on…
