Best Laid Plans Weekend

Mini Show Notes & Solo Weekend

May 24, 2021

Show Notes: Ep #43 with Elise Cripe of Get to Work Book

I have been following Elise and her beautifully designed product, the Get to Work Book, for quite some time. In fact, I did a review of this planner in 2018!

Having Elise on the show was such a pleasure. First, it was interesting to hear about the uncanny parallels in our planning styles. Second, she was just so calm, nice, and kind.

She graciously sent me a copy of her academic year planner – this incredibly functional and professional planner runs from July 2021 – June 2022. While I am tempted to dive in myself and literally wish I could use 10 planners well, alas . . . this is not reality. So Elise was okay with me providing this book as a giveaway for you all!

To enter, just leave a comment on today’s post. I will ship wherever (though concerningly I shipped something to a planner friend in South Africa months ago and I don’t think it ever made it).

I will do a random number drawing on Wednesday (May 24) and announce the winner!

SHOW SPONSOR: I have really enjoyed using PrepDish for meal planning lately, and I definitely encourage you to give it a try if you’d like to minimize prep time during the week or just want some healthy new ideas! Visit prep dish.com/plans for your first 2 weeks free. They have an array of menus to choose from, and you get access to them all each week – super fast, gluten free, paleo, or keto.

Solo Weekend Life

Well. It was another solo parenting weekend and . . . I survived. Actually, this one was somewhat better — I did have some childcare on Saturday morning (I had a work event involving yoga in a park!) and Sunday included a zoo trip (Palm Beach Zoo this time, which was lovely!) with A’s BFF, BFF’s twin brother, and their mother who I am friends with.

ALSO, A had her very last soccer game of the season. (As you may recall, G dropped out). She says she wants to play again in the fall. I am hoping the school team is up and running this fall because that would be incredibly convenient, but I guess we will see.

@ the zoo:

I feel really tired today, though. I feel like I need a week off. Luckily, Josh and I do have a mini getaway this week (Weds – Friday!). I will be back Wednesday for the giveaway, but otherwise I think I will take a break from this space for a week or so and I am going to skip doing a BLP ep this coming Monday. I’m also considering a BLP Summer Hiatus (because let’s face it — June/July aren’t really key times of the year for planning, anyway).

OH! And I read this book:

The Jetsetters by Amanda Eyre Ward (this caught my eye as a selection for the Williams Book Club – author is an alumnus)

It was like candy and I enjoyed it.

I’d love to be entered. I just started experimenting with a weekly planner again after doing mostly daily for awhile, and I’m liking it a lot.

Ooh, it does look very cool! I am doing some planning for summer and I just want to take it slightly easier. I have fulltime childcare and it’s been such a chaotic year. We’re not planning much travelling but just want to take some time to do cycle rides and walks, and read books.

I will SOOO miss BLP this summer!!! I don’t know how/why but my life has no shortage of planning/goals/craziness that needs to be organized in my planner to calm my spinning brain all year round!!! Not complaining, it’s a beautiful life i have, chaos and all… but i have so loved the inspiration you have shared and the uplifting way you have of looking at your full calendar and obligations rather than the dread and drudgery I feel from all other planning systems i have tried!!! All that to say thankyou so much for being you, and sharing yourself in these ways thru your blog and podcast(s)! Wishing you a wonderful, restful time! Hope your getaway this week is fabulous!!! And that your summer is even better!!! and welcome to 41! Woo!! 🙂

I am interested in the planner. As a teacher with two kids in school my life revolves around the academic year. I have never used a calendar year planner actually, now that I think about it.

  • Reply Donna Sava May 24, 2021 at 9:59 am

I’d love to have a new planner to try…consider me entered please! My twin boys are going off to college in August and I’m trying to shake up my routine!

On a separate note…I was laughing at the pen sizes you were talking about…those would be so tiny to me! I use a bold line…the 1.6 maxum pens! You would just hate them! LOL!

  • Reply JGold May 24, 2021 at 10:05 am

Interested in the planner. I enjoyed the episode! Thanks!

  • Reply Ana May 24, 2021 at 11:27 am

I’m perusing academic planners (my academic job does run July-June so it does make sense for me…) this one looks AWESOME, I’ll throw my hat in the ring.

  • Reply Lori C May 24, 2021 at 11:46 am

Well this is aptly timed! I actually just searched your blog last week to see if you had reviewed the Get to Work book and found your old review! It’s been in my cart for a while but haven’t pulled the trigger yet… although I did just buy some sample pages from Elise which helped me realize this is a great planner for me. Would love to win it!!

Random side note- but Sarah did you listen to the recent Pantsuit Politics episode on mask wearing and vaccines? They had an interesting perspective I never thought of before. The episode is called “we are driven to do the right thing.” I think you would find the discussion valuable, as would your other readers I am sure.

  • Reply Erika May 24, 2021 at 11:49 am

I’m returning to my office next week so a mid-year planner reset would be perfect! Would love to try this one.

I’m glad your solo parenting weekend went better this time. Yay for childcare (even though you needed it for plans, not for setting your own plans for the day, although yoga in the park sounds fun!). We had a really full weekend here – MIL over for a bday dinner on Sat, college friends brought brunch to us on Sun am so they could finally meet the baby, and then we went to a friend’s house in the neighborhood to check out the remodel they did during the pandemic. It felt like a lot because I am so used to NO plans, but at the same time it felt great to SEE PEOPLE. This is the stuff I missed during the pandemic so am very happy to have social plans again – even though I’m an introvert!

I’d love to check out this planner!

This episode was so good — I’m actually listening to it again this morning! It also comes at a weirdly good time, because I’m realizing that my system for keeping track of projects (Todoist) is not working and I’m contemplating a move to tracking projects on paper. The paper positivity on this episode is infectious! 😀 Enjoy your break, and happy belated birthday!

(oh, and I’d love to try the planner!)
