Things To Do Instead of Scroll

July 21, 2021

Yesterday there was a WHOLE LOT of scrolling.

It was a super busy work day (not a bad one, but full and ~10 hours of basically nonstop work, mostly patent care) and somehow that translated into me feeling completely useless upon arriving home.

And so I scrolled and practiced lazy parenting (sorry children!) (not mean parenting or anything, just fairly lazy) and ate animal crackers for dinner and SCROLLED some more.

I would like to not repeat that performance and my call week continues, so I am hereby reminding myself oof the following options for other activities:

I mean, maybe scrolling served its purpose yesterday (and so did the animal crackers) but I’d prefer to fit my time with other things. You know, take my own advice from my own Best Laid Plans Ep!!

(Re-aired this week! PS: I’m chock full of ideas for new episodes, coming soon! Please submit your questions or suggestions!)

Another good thing to do that tends to boost my mood is to go through photos from a previous month or year. I get such joy from this project, which I do on a monthly basis (this month, I went through all previous July photos in google photos and deleted duplicates/bad photos/screen shots/etc and then I went through last month’s photos). So it’s enjoyable but also productive/satisfying to clean things up! Makes me think of the ‘remembering self’ concept that I think Laura talked about in one of her books? So my experiencing self in those times, especially the pregnancy and early baby years, maybe was not LOVING every moment, but my remembering self can look at those photos and have good, uplifting feelings about those times!

I know you don’t like to read ebooks, but having a book going on the kindle ap is also helpful! That’s what I try to go to when I have downtime instead of scrolling… but I’m not always great at that, so I have a hard 20 min limit between FB and IG, and also block those aps from 4:30-6:30 when I should be focusing on the kids and not be on my phone. So basically, I need to police my social media usage as I can’t always be trusted to make the best decisions! 😉

Love your list of other activities. Seeing old photos, home mani/pedi are great ideas. I sometimes write a long email to a close friend, with random little updates of my life.

I’ve been slowly working on a 8 by 12 needlepoint. I worked on it last summer then stopped for 6 months and then started again. It’s nice to focus on at night, even for just 20 minutes and to see the progress. It’s my quiet time when the kids go to bed. Other saving grace has been reading!
