Might as well keep this going!
Yesterday a commenter asked if I bring/use my planner(s) on vacation. The answer is YES. I do a daily page, mostly to remember and appreciate the fun things we have done (and the laziness/relaxation). And yesterday I took some downtime to fill out the August section in my Powersheets. I’ve also been keeping up with my 5-year journal though I plan on adding pictures after I get home (I didn’t bring my sticker printer . . . though I could have!).
To me, all of this only adds to the vacation experience.
(To others, it might take away.)
You do you — but know that bringing/using planners on vacation can be one option to try.
Yesterday (vac day #3)
(We realized yesterday that 6 days is not quite long enough and next year will plan on 7-9 . . . and someday the elusive 2 weeks which we haven’t done in years or maybe ever.)
Kids up @ 7:30
I ran on the beach for 30 min
Josh took big kids fishing while I took G to the pool. They didn’t catch anything – but I think they had fun!
G and I hung out, had lunch, watched Pinkalicious (she watched, I played with my PowerSheets and August/Q4 goal setting!)
~4pm we headed to the skateboard park. Admittedly I initially resisted because I had been with G all morning and was a little over it, but it ended up being fun.
Finished off with takeout from Loop Pizza Grill (mostly because Josh and I were very nostalgic for that place – we ate there ALL THE TIME at a location in Chapel Hill from ~2007-2010, residency years), ice cream (yet again), and Because of Winn Dixie.

Whoa on c and his skateboarding! That’s so cool! I wish I could do that!
It’s a good sign that you are wanting more time on vacation – must be going MUCH better than your last trip! Yay! My husband prefers short trips so we typically are only gone for 4-5 days max. I would like something a little longer but haven’t won that negotiation yet. 😉
I also bring my planner on trips. If nothing else, we like to talk about meal plans towards the end of the trip so we can update our shopping list and I prefer to plan meals in my planner. I’ve always had an A5 sized planner, though, so it’s easy to bring along!
Sarah – gold star for getting selfies/pictures with the kids. Love, love, love the one of you and G.
We’re wrapping up a week of vacation and I think I’ve only been in one picture. I don’t especially enjoy being in photos, but need to make this happen more!
You’ve inspired me!
We always did a week or less for summer vacation and then last year when our kids were 6 and 7 we tried two weeks for the first time and it was amazing. We’ve now decided to try to make our August vacation two weeks for the foreseeable future—you really do feel more completely relaxed. With a 3.5 year old I think two weeks might feel too long but you are close to getting there! For us it’s nice too because camps in our area end the first week of August and school doesn’t return for three more weeks so we also avoid needing childcare by going on vacation!
No hate for the Loop! We live super close to the Chapel Hill one. For some reason we only go about once a year when they have a Spirit Night at our school because we have another favorite pizza place but I do love their kale salad.
