Parties . . .

December 14, 2021

So. Many. Parties.

This past weekend we had our resident holiday party (that we arranged), a resident baby shower (I was flattered to be invited!), and G’s 4th bday party. ALL were fun, but that was just — a lot of parties! All were outside and we are very lucky that the weather right now is conducive to these outdoor gatherings.

G’s party was held outdoor at a park shelter — I was nervous everyone would be bored but it turns out 4 year olds are pretty much fine just running around in open space.

(Actually 4-6 year olds because of her Montessori class!)

We did an “Egg Hunt” with pre-filled easter-type eggs and I had sidewalk chalk available. And that was about it for party entertainment! Simple but fine. We ordered food (bagels, fruit, veg, and a giant chocolate birthday cake) from Whole Foods and people ate it.

Then Josh’s uncle flew a drone overhead in a field (see overhead shot below).

I have to say it was more work than a prefab party and I’d much rather NOT do all that work, but we survived.

We have an office happy hour on Thursday, and tonight at 8 pm is the goal setting BOBW Patreon session which will be a party in and of itself (it’s not too late to join us!).

And then for our family, the next two weeks (Dec 20 – Jan 2) will actually be relatively quiet. As noted previously, we will both be working but there will be no meetings, no parties, no kid activities and the office will probably be really quiet since many will be taking off. I am actually looking forward into that as a nice segue into 2022.

Ah. So precious. And that cake looks amazing!!

I am always so relieved when birthday parties are over. It is a fun celebration…but also a lot of work, and I always feel like things CAN go sour (i.e. when kids were younger making sure everyone was having a good time/preventing tantrums). We’ve yet to have a “bad” birthday, but I always do feel like I’m holding my breath the whole time. Party planning just isn’t my thing.

Enjoy the respite from parties and hope your time on call goes smoothly. We’re just ramping up into holiday events, but Omicron is really spiraling here in Canada and so things are starting to get cancelled. I’m just waiting to get news that school is stopping early…I will be shocked if that doesn’t end up happening in the next few days. Sigh.

I found that Montessori kids especially are extremely good at entertaining themselves. Hope you enjoyed the parties but also enjoy the quieter weeks. πŸ™‚

We love outdoor birthday parties! My son’s birthday is in August. We have done a picnic shelter at a park for several of his birthday parties. One was next to a playground and a field, one was in between a playground and a splash pad and one was next to a creek. No planned activities for any of them, just set them loose to play. We love it.
