Josh and I are both working winter break this year.
I am on call for Christmas week – Dec 21 – 27. He is on call for most of New Years’ week, including New Years’ Eve + the first weekend of the near year.
He also worked Thanksgiving, so yes – lots of holiday call! The reason for so much call on his end was because last December, we all got COVID and he missed the week of holiday call he was signed up for. And I volunteered to cover Christmas week this year because it was just time for me to take a major holiday, and since it’s not my major holiday I’m happy to do it!
I was sort of dreading the end of this year, but honestly I think it will be okay. Our nanny will be on vac on a tropical island (well-deserved!) but a) our favorite adjunct babysitter is home from college and b) the school is offering “camp” Mon – Weds of both weeks.
I signed all 3 kids up for both weeks of our school’s “winter break camp”, which means coverage for many of the days we are working PLUS two additional days which I am going to freaking enjoy some peace and recover from my call week!
I’m also taking off January 3rd as a ‘reward’ to myself for working Christmas week and for surviving lots of solo parenting (despite the camp days, there will be plenty)! HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ME.
During these days off I plan on:
Curating my 2022 reading list (at least the start of one)
Working on podcast plans — BLP + BOBW episode ideas + outlines
Watching the Organize 365 Planning Day video (I won’t have childcare Jan 1st when it airs, but am planning to watch/participate virtually on Jan 3rd on my day off)
Finish transferring to 2022 planners/systems entirely 🙂
All I can say is I hope the kids don’t get sick at an inopportune time and mess up this plan. Fingers crossed . . .
Also, next year we are hoping to ski during winter break (first family ski trip – for our kids that have barely seen snow. G never has!). So, more things to look forward to in 2022.
Okay, run time. Happy Friday!

Wow! That’s intense timing with both of you on call over the holidays, but sounds ideal to have those school “winter camps.” Hope those few days off WITH childcare in place give you a great boost for welcoming the New Year.
We had a snowday yesterday and our new babysitter (we almost never have childcare, which I’m in the process of changing) came for 2 hours. It was glorious. She’s a teenager with so much enthusiasm for life and playing with children. The kids had the best time ever and I feel like I’m off the hook for playing hide-and-seek for at least the next month…?
That is awesome that your school offers camps. I bet a lot of families take advantage of that. Our daycare is only closed for 3 days which isn’t much. I have heard others daycares are closed for a week+! So I am glad that is not the case for us as we aren’t taking time off around the holidays. So my husband and I will split the days and try to both work. It is a quiet time for my work so it shouldn’t be too bad!
Love that Washi tape and it’s a cheery way to mark off call!
Thanks for keeping the blog going in this busy season. You recommended some planner that I LOVE. So helpful. I have tried several based on your reviews. This year I am using the B6 Wonderland222 for career planning, the printable Amplify planner for daily and the B6 Kokuyo Jibun Techo Biz Lite for appointments and time tracking.
I want to note for all medical people out there, B6 size fits perfectly in a white coat pocket.
oooooh, good to know re: the B6!
Hi Sarah, I hope you have a great holiday season! I was wondering, what is your system for organizing people’s addresses so that you send your Christmas cards, or birthdays invites ? If you can please say a few words about it, it will be great!
