Goals

it’s MAY: goals & vibes

May 1, 2022

I am really looking forward to this month. I have to be careful, because I can become quickly overhyped + let down by May — not only is it usually filled with end-of-year activities, but it contains Mother’s Day, my birthday, and our wedding anniversary!

That said . . . I have a very keen sense of positive anticipation right now and I’m just going to go with it.

Main goals:

Finish getting kids ready for camp

Keep working on cleaning up eating habits (started ~1.5 weeks ago and I feel so much better already)

ENJOY a date night and 2-night anniversary getaway (yay!)

Build in some solo kid time (and maybe incorporate Laura’s idea of weekly adventures . . . even if minor)

GET SHELVING (IKEA) so we can finish unpacking

Restart Organize 365 – I think this will be the round I finally finish. We will see . .

Get back into some fun reading (starting summer reading early . . .)

Coree in the comments mentioned being in Summer Mode already – yep, feeling it too even though the kids have another month of school. But I’m in need of a fresh start so I’m just leaning into it! We’ll just say Q3/Summer is here . . .

PS: I did switch planners. More on that later.

I would also love to transition to “summer mode”, but that is a little difficult here in WI where the weather has been in the 40s-50s consistently yet!!! This has been the worst weather spring, seriously. I have no idea when it’s finally going to warm up. We never have great springs here, but this is abnormally cool even for us. Boo. Saw a news report on TV the other morning reporting from Miami and omg it looked just heavenly.

Lol right there with you in MI GK.

Also in the Midwest, and we are having a crummy spring. As I type this, it’s 45 degrees and rainy. Yesterday was 68 and beautiful, but we have to wait until next weekend for the temperatures to warm back up again! I can’t wait to shift into summer mode but I am just not there yet.

The end of the school year is tricky for planning! There are a lot of fun things going on, and yet I sometimes struggle with energy and not having enough introvert time. I WANT to do all the things because they’re fun, meaningful, important to my kids, etc. And after 2 years of missing that, I’m leaning into the activity.

Definitely summer mode. I just want to ride my bike and tackle the half done house projects. Everytime someone can’t find something, I do an ominous “hmmmm…. that will be rectified soon….”. I think my husband and son might send me BACK to work city, because they fear for their clutter. Currently have a pile of things to smuggle to the charity shop when they are at work/school tomorrow.

I’m going on a writing retreat next week and am SO excited! I had hoped to work on my book, but haven’t had the time to really prep for it, so my plan is to make a list of the 4 writing projects outstanding, with tasks for each, from small to large, and get as much done as I can. I should be able to get 3/4 back to coauthors so they are at least off my plate. This week, I’m trying to clear the decks to keep anyone from emailing me about anything urgent whist I’m away.

May I recommend The Diamond Eye by Kate Quinn? Perfect for getting out of a reading rut. I’ve loved all her recent historical fictions.

I have a May anniversary, too! We’ll celebrate 5 years this month. We haven’t talked about how we will celebrate, but maybe with a day date during the week while the kids are in daycare. I don’t know how someone else could do our 4yos bedtime… :/ Unless we did an early dinner and got home in time to do his bedtime. We haven’t had a sitter since Feb 2020! We did try to hire one in December when we went to our neighbors’ 40th bday party at their house, but then the baby had a terrible allergic reaction to amoxicillin and ended up with serum sickness so we had to cancel the sitter. But… in December we are hoping to go away to somewhere warm, maybe Mexico. We haven’t spent a night together away from our kids since they were born, aside from the 2-night stay when Will was born but that was NOT a getaway. 😉

I’m not in summer mode yet either, but like other commenters it has not been remotely summer or even spring-like here! We are having one of the worst springs I can remember but things are looking up this week!
